"You…" Kate's face burned with anger and embarrassment.
Her eyes bulged when she heard a soft snort, and she turned in its direction to see Lauren with her head bowed, looking as though she were trying hard to hold back her laughter.
Kate's heart turned bitter with hatred.
"I'm talking to our guests, so you don't need to stand here anymore. Go to that table over there and read the book I've prepared for you. Memorize its contents and learn from it to improve yourself. That way, when you return to work, you won't be completely worthless.
"You don't want to keep freeloading and getting paid for doing nothing, do you? Your colleagues will start to hate you for that," Sawyer said, his tone gentle, almost instructive.
But Kate only felt humiliated. Her heart ached so badly that it was almost as if it had been torn to pieces.
Lauren finally managed to hold back her laughter. "Ms. Pearson, you've been at it for a while. You must be hungry, right?"
Sawyer calmly said, "She's put on a lot of weight since we got married, so it would be good for her to skip a meal or two to lose the pounds. Don't worry about her, everyone. Why don't you try the food and see whether it's to your liking?"
Kate swayed on her feet, almost falling to the floor. She'd never, ever been so insulted in her life! Never!
She wanted nothing more than to flip the table on its end. But she knew that if she actually did that, Sawyer would follow up with even worse treatment. After all, he'd kept his true intentions hidden for so long. There was no way he would let her off the hook so easily.
Whenever she had time, she racked her brains, trying to analyze the reason behind Sawyer's actions. However, she drew a blank.
What could she do? How was she going to escape this place that suffocated and tormented her?
Kate's gaze slowly drifted to the dining table, landing on George, whose profile faced her. Among the three guests, she figured that he was most likely to help her.
With that thought in mind, she started searching for the right opportunity to ask him for help.
But in the meantime, she felt like Sawyer's endless commands were torturing her.
