Rhea and George left as Kate watched them with despair and resignation.
Lauren wasn't in a hurry to leave, though. A delicate gift bag hung from her arm. It carried the gift Sawyer had prepared for her and the other two.
She sized Kate up. "Are you in trouble?"
Kate's nerves twitched. She hated to admit it, but Lauren was her only hope now. She quickly said, "Lauren, let's set aside our differences for now. Help me this once, and I'll make sure to repay you in the future. What do you think?"
Lauren slowly nodded. "You need to tell me how much trouble you're in first so I can decide how much your repayment should be."
Kate felt the impulse to slap her. She thought that Lauren was such a greedy, opportunistic snake!
She glanced at the manor's door and hissed, "What do you want? I can give you everything I have right now. My jewelry, my custom-made gowns, and even my expensive handbags—take your pick!"
Lauren was surprised by how generous Kate was being, but she didn't let it show. She smiled mysteriously and said, "Fine. Since you're being so generous, I'll help you get your father over here. Have patience."
Kate grew agitated. "Really? Thanks, Lauren! As long as you can get my father to come here, I'll bury the hatchet and let bygones be bygones!"
Lauren shot her a look. "I need to go now."
Kate clenched her fists as she watched Lauren leave. She never would've thought that in the end, Lauren, despite being such a bitch, was the only one willing to help her.
Still, if Lauren really thought that she'd be getting all that expensive stuff, she was dead wrong. Kate would rather throw them into the chicken coop than give them to her.
Lauren had opposed her every step of the way, yet she thought she could extort her by doing her such a small favor. Kate would make sure that Lauren was doomed to be stuck in her miserable life forever.
Kate hurried back to the house. As soon as she set foot inside, Keaton locked the door behind her. She could've made a run for it earlier, but she knew very well what the consequences of that were. Not only would her reputation be ruined, but she would probably be accused of abandoning her marriage.
After all, she and Sawyer were still newlyweds. She had big plans for a good life in the future; she wouldn't do anything that would jeopardize herself.
