"Can't you just tell me why? Why do you have to torture me like this?" Kate couldn't stand the bitterness that was now her life. The more she tasted it, the more she missed the peace and stability she'd had in the past.
And the more she thought about that, the more agonizing her life felt right now. It was a vicious cycle, and she was about to have a meltdown.
"You have terrible patience." Sawyer snorted. "Look at yourself. Do you think you stand a chance against Ms. Ravelle? You don't even know how worthless you are, yet you feel you're worthy of living a worry-free life full of material comforts. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Now, keep scrubbing. If you don't finish this by today, you're cooking your own dinner."
Kate's nails scraped against the floor as she watched him leave. A free lunch, huh? He made a point.
When Connor first tried to set them up, why hadn't it occurred to her to question why Sawyer was being so nice to her for no reason? If it were solely because of Connor, would he have needed to go to such lengths?
She remembered one thing he'd said to her—that he'd known her for a long time. She thought that it only meant that he'd heard about her for years because of his relationship with Connor. In fact, she'd entertained the notion that he'd had a crush on her.
It would explain why he was always so accommodating toward her and why he gave her whatever she wanted without expecting anything in return.
Kate laughed self-deprecatingly as tears streamed down her face. How could she have been so stupid? Why hadn't she thought more of this?
She forced herself to continue scrubbing the rest of the floors. When she was done, she changed into something that would cover her knees before heading to the dining room.
However, all she saw was an empty dining table with only a vase of flowers in the center. She went to the kitchen, where the maids were preparing some greens and doing other chores.
She asked, "Where's dinner?"
Taryn pointed carelessly in a direction. "Over there."
Kate glanced over and almost fainted from anger. Those were just leftovers!
Aside from a portion that would be sent to Sawyer, the maids would usually split up what was left. But now, there was barely any food left. All Kate saw were some leftovers.
When had she ever eaten leftovers, especially ones that others had already enjoyed?
