Sylvia read the messages with relish. “Oh, by the way, did you hear? Your father’s been arrested. The trial’s about to start.” 

Kate’s head shot up. “What did you say? That’s impossible!” 

It had been so long. How could there still be evidence? Connor was the only hope she had left. If he’d been arrested, then she… The rest of her life would be… 

She collapsed to the floor in a daze, mumbling, “Am I going to be trapped here for life?” 

Sylvia laughed. “You wish. Trapped here for life? That would be letting you live in comfort.”

Kate froze. “We? You’re bringing me along?” 

Was Sawyer actually bringing her out? What was he planning? 

After 40 minutes, their car stopped in front of the courthouse. Outside, a crowd of reporters had already gathered. They were waiting for someone to come out.
