Chapter 616
Had Kate actually fallen in love with Sawyer?
But… could she? Vanity was all she had. Did she even have the capacity to love anyone?
More and more reporters crowded in, all eager to interview her, the once–celebrated, now–infamous socialite of Draventh.
Suddenly, Kate stumbled and fell.
The reporters all stepped back in unison. No one dared to help her up; some of them even crouched, shoving their microphones closer to her face.
Kate didn’t take her eyes off Sawyer, even through the gaps in the crowd. A bitter smile lingered on her face, her eyes overflowing with tears.
She reached out, as if to touch his face, which was in her line of sight. She whispered, “I’ve never regretted anything I’ve done… I’m a bad person, so I’m bound to live a bad life… I only regret not meeting you when I was at my best. Maybe things wouldn’t have turned out like this…”
Her voice was barely audible, but Sawyer’s eyes were sharp enough to read the movement of her lips. His brow twitched, and a jolt rippled through his chest.
Kate’s voice grew fainter until no sound came out at all. Tears covered her entire face.
She continued staring at Sawyer as she mouthed, “You must feel disgusted, having someone like me love you…”
A piercing scream split the air, sending a few timid female reporters stumbling back. Within seconds, the crowd parted around Kate, leaving an empty circle.
Kate’s hand slowly dropped, and she fainted. Tears of blood stained her cheeks.
They were so stark and terrifying.
Three days later, the frenzy in Draventh finally ebbed.
Connor was sentenced to several years in prison. Word had it that when he was taken away, he ranted and raved, his mind already slipping. A once–revered professor was now disgraced.
As for Kate, she’d gone blind.
She hadn’t slept well in ages, and days and nights of crying had already weakened her eyes. At the courthouse, faced with the total collapse of her world, the shock pushed her over the edge. The bloody tears came–followed by blindness.

It was a marriage certificate–hers and Sawyer’s.
She clutched it to her as she felt her way to a corner of the room, braced herself against the wall, and crouched, curling up there without moving.
Her tears seemed endless. She didn’t gasp for air or sob; she simply let them fall.
“If you keep crying like this, you could lose your eyeballs,” the nurse couldn’t help but say.
It was hard to tell whether Kate heard her because she didn’t react at all.
She stayed like that for the next three months, until the trees outside a different window turned bare again.
“Hey, Draventh’s George Snider and Rhea Ravelle have gotten married.”
