Sawyer had to admit that he was surprised that Kate had chosen to end her dark, humiliating life in this manner.
Jackson came over with a cup of tea and sat beside him. “Are you thinking about her?”
“I am,” Sawyer said. “But I don’t miss her. I thought that she would cling to life and drag it out in pain, like Sylvia once did.”
Jackson looked at him. “She was your wife in name. Now that she’s dead, all the grudges between you two are settled. Are you going to see her off?”
Did Sawyer want to see her off on her final journey?
News of Kate’s death reached Connor in prison. He stared at Sawyer’s secretary, Winston, his eyes devoid of light.
Evie had jumped to her death, and Kate had bitten off her tongue. In this family, he was the only one left.
No–there was still Sawyer. No matter the depth of the hatred between them, the latter was still his son–in–law.
Connor asked, “Where is Sawyer?”
Winston’s expression was blank as he said, “Mr. Burton is busy entertaining guests.”
Entertaining guests?
Connor suddenly burst into laughter. “He’s entertaining guests? Is he smiling at them and seeing my daughter off with a grin? Tell him that he’ll face retribution. I’m the one who did this; I’m the one who harmed his sister! Not my daughter!
“She may have had ill intentions and a vicious tongue, but those aren’t crimes worthy of death! He used marriage to tear my daughter apart. He’ll face retribution for that! She didn’t deserve to die! He’ll be punished for this!”
Connor screamed himself hoarse, his words tumbling over each other. His eyes were bloodshot, the corners wrinkled with age. His back was no longer straight, and he hunched like an old man.
Winston didn’t say anything. He simply stood to leave.
Connor fixed his gaze on him, his voice suddenly calm. “Tell him that no one will ever love him in this lifetime.”
