Lauren had stumbled into the Jamison residence past midnight the day before. She’d finished her IV treatment at the hospital around 11:00 pm, yet she still felt dizzy. Looking completely miserable, she had no choice but to drag herself to Carter for help. 

She was burning up with fever, and the shot she had received did nothing to help. 

She slept in the guest room, wrapped in a thick quilt as sweat streamed continuously down her flushed face. She shivered violently, her lips pale. 

Carter came to check on her in the morning. “Hey, wake up.” 

Lauren’s head felt impossibly heavy as she forced her eyelids open and hummed groggily. “Hmm?” 

“I’m off to work. There are housekeepers at home, so ask them to take you to the hospital if you need to go,” he said. 

Lauren could barely keep her eyes open. “Okay, don’t worry… I won’t kick the bucket in your house.” 

Carter was struck speechless by her response. He was just trying to help, so why was she spouting all that nonsense? 

He decided to let her be. He couldn’t be bothered whether she went to the hospital. 

He turned to leave in a huff. 

Lauren had truly meant well. In fact, her thoughts were just that simple. No matter what, she couldn’t allow herself to die in Carter’s villa. 

A minute later, Carter returned. “Are you sure you’re okay? If not, I’ll send you to the hospital right now.” 

Lauren pried her eyes open. “You’re overreacting. I’m not going to drop dead in your house.” 

“What’s your problem? Do you think that’s what I’m worried about? Just how heartless do you think I am?” he snapped. 

Lauren tried her best to keep her eyes open, rasping out the words even as her breath scorched her throat. “I mean it. I won’t die here. If I do, this will become a haunted house, and its market value will drop. 

“This place is supposed to go to my two kids in the future. They’ll get less than what they deserve if the house depreciates.” 

So, even if she had to crawl out the front door, she refused to die in this house. 

For a moment, Lauren was almost touched by her own selflessness.
