Chapter 4
“She got the kid back in the end, but she herself was… by all those men… God, she kept the baby but the trauma will never go away.”
“But the little girl didn’t do anything wrong either. None of this was her fault.”
“Yeah, even the doctor said privately that she just can’t get past it mentally, she transferred all her hate and fear onto the kid, treats her like an enemy. That’s why she hates her, why she keeps losing control…”
Even the usually serious head of security sighed:
“And the boss isn’t any better. He used to treasure that little girl like gold. But… no choice. He loves his wife more. His wife’s emotional state always comes first.”
Tve watched him keep the kid away from his wife to avoid triggering her, scared the kid would get snatched by traffickers again if she ran off, so he kept that tiny child locked in a cage all day… it breaks my heart.”
“Still, maybe it’s better that she’s being sent away. I heard the boss worked hard to find her a good family.”
“At least it’s better than staying here and suffering.”
I just floated there listening.
My chest felt hollow and empty. My eyes felt dry but no tears would come out anymore.
Daddy, Mommy-this time you don’t have to worry about me anymore.
I won’t cause you trouble ever again.
My consciousness drifted into their bedroom without me meaning to.
Mom was awake, sitting up in bed, still looking pretty pale.
Her long eyelashes were lowered. After a quiet moment, she said to Dad:
“Don’t let her come back. Send her far away… I still… I can’t handle her.”
Dad nodded immediately: “Okay. Whatever you want.”
He held Mom’s hand. Mom looked like she’d finally put down something super heavy and let out a soft breath.
My fingers grabbed my clothes really tight. My heart felt like someone had carved a hole in it. Cold and empty.
Right then, Dad’s phone rang.
He answered it. The driver’s panicked voice came through right away:
“Mr. Blackthorne! Your daughter, she…”
“Ugh… my head hurts…” Mom suddenly squeezed her eyes shut and grabbed her forehead.
Dad’s face changed. He said into the phone really fast: “I’ll call you back!” and hung up.
