Chapter 5
He swallowed hard and added with difficulty:
“After she got thrown from the car, she ran into a wolf pack. When we got to her… she still had vital signs.”
If we’d rushed her to the hospital for a blood transfusion right away, maybe she could’ve made it… but your phone kept going to voicemail…”
Dad woke up. After making sure Mom wasn’t disturbed, he quietly closed the bedroom door tight.
His face showed zero concern-just annoyance at being bothered: “What game is she playing now?”
the driver froze, about to speak again, but Dad cut him off with a cold laugh.
te walked past the driver toward the car: “Tessa, cut it out. Wasn’t faking dead in your cage last time enough drama? You’re trying that trick again?”
Where does a kid your age learn all these manipulative-”
Why can’t you just be normal? How did I end up with a daughter like-”
rowning, he opened the car door.
When he saw the mangled, bloody body in the back seat, he froze like he’d been struck by lightning.
ad looked like the scene terrified him. He stumbled back two steps, nearly falling.
le stared blankly for the longest time before his shaking hand reached out to touch that tiny body, voice hoarse and terrifying: “Tessa…”
Tessa, wake up… Daddy was wrong, Daddy won’t send you away, never again…”
Dad’s voice was panicked and begging in a way I’d never heard before.
le gently shook my shoulder, like he was trying to wake me up.
don’t know when Mom came outside. She stood at the beach house entrance, staring blankly at the car.
Ahhhh!!!”
Mom let out a horrible scream. All the strength drained out of her and she collapsed on the ground.
fter a long moment, she suddenly snapped to-crawling toward the car on her hands and knees.
Tessa… Tessa… my Tessa…”
he threw herself at the car and pulled my cold, stiff body into a tight hug:
Tessa…
… open your eyes and look at Mommy… don’t scare Mommy… please wake up…”
but I’d never open my eyes again.
Mom’s movements suddenly froze. She stared blankly at her palms-covered completely in red blood. My blood.
she turned her head mechanically toward Dad, who looked just as shattered, and grabbed his arm:
‘Honey… honey… so much blood… what happened to Tessa? She’ll be okay, right? Say something! She’ll be okay!”
Mom seemed to be having another episode.
Her eyes were full of madness and terror.
Suddenly, she started frantically hitting her own head, making painful whimpering sounds.
Dad’s eyes were bloodshot red as he held her tight, letting her fists pound on him.
“It’s my fault… I was wrong… we were both wrong…”
Chapter 5
Mom struggled in Dad’s arms, tears rolling down one after another:
“It was the wolves… My Tessa.. she… how scared must she have been… how much did it hurt…”
Before she finished, she suddenly burst into sharp, weiril laughter:
“Good! She’s dead! Hahahaha! finally dead! She should’ve died sooner! It’s all her fault! If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have… wouldn’t have become like this!
Hahahaha!”
she cried and laughed at the same time, acting totally crazy.
The violent emotions finally drained all her strength. Everything went black and she passed out completely in Dad’s arms.
