"No!"
Finn's voice rose sharply, breaking through the stillness. "I've only ever treated Nadine as an employee. I never had any other feelings for her."
Julia's reply was calm but cutting. "Finn, if you were truly above reproach, those rumors wouldn't have spread the way they did. With your influence and position, you could have silenced them easily, yet you didn't."
Her words landed hard. Finn's throat tightened. The explanations he wanted to give stuck halfway out, unable to move up or down.
"But ... Grandma, I really didn't."
His denial sounded dry, almost helpless.
Julia knew her grandson well enough.
She shook her head with disappointment. "You didn't call just to ask about the past, did you? You want my help winning Tess back."
Hearing her say it so plainly, Finn looked embarrassed but still nodded firmly. "Yes, Grandma. I've realized how I feel about her. I don't want to lose her again."
Julia didn't respond immediately. Instead, she asked quietly, "Finn, if you were Tess, would you take you back?"
The question caught him off guard. He frowned, then fell silent, thinking.
"Imagine being framed and sent to prison while your partner believed the lies and refused to help you," Julia continued. "Then imagine coming out after a year, your career and reputation destroyed, and hearing that same partner was caught in rumors with your adopted sister."
Finn's expression darkened as she went on, every word hitting its mark.
By the time she stopped, Julia's throat felt dry. She let out a bitter breath. "Finn, you really are an idiot."
He lowered his head, accepting every word. His quiet submission softened her anger a little. After all, he was still her grandson.
"Listen," Julia said, her tone gentler now. "What a woman needs most is affection and care. You ignored her when she needed it. And now that there are other good men around her, you're panicking. Back then, when you were so close with Nadine, did you ever think how that must have felt for her?"
She sighed.
"I know, Grandma. I was wrong."
He sounded sincere this time. Julia nodded. "I'll do what I can to help you, but I can't promise anything. Most of it depends on you."
Hearing that, Finn's dull eyes suddenly brightened.
"Grandma, really? You'll help me?"
He almost couldn't contain his excitement, his whole posture lifting with renewed energy.
