Chapter 110
Harper
As Tiffany did everything possible not to burst out in tears, Grayson constantly poked his cheek the way he always did when he was extremely pissed. He had really tried to keep up with Maddox, but even I knew he was far from his level.
During a round of applause that had everyone on their feet for Maddox, he rose to feet and held out his hand for me. I was so hesitant because everyone was watching and I didn’t expect it, but I ended up holding his hand and approaching the stage with him.
Margot had that fake smile plastered on her lips and seeing it up close was just so unsettling.
She presented the diamond necklace to him and I thought we would just leave the stage, until he stood right behind me to put the necklace around my neck.
“Wait…” I gasped as I tried to look back at him with wide eyes. “What are you doing?”
“I got it for you,” he said with no hesitation.
My heart skipped a beat before it started racing. I had so many questions which I couldn’t ask as the cameras flashed just to capture the billion dollar necklace around my neck.
Even as Maddox led me back to our seat, I couldn’t stop looking down at my neck while his hand was wrapped around my waist.
Tiffany and Grayson were whispering to each other, their body language a bit rough. To me, it looked like they were arguing right there.
It was only when Mr. Aldridge said something to both of them that they gave it a rest.
With a scowl, she leaned back in her seat, crossed her arms and looked the other side like she didn’t want to look at Grayson anymore.
We were about to take our seats when I spotted uncle Sebastian giving a thumbs up to Maddox.
Kate rolled her eyes when I looked over, like she had an actual chance of getting that necklace.
Just a few seconds after I sat back down, Mr. Aldridge leaned towards me. “Congratulations.”
“Thank you.” I smiled brightly, still not believing that I had that necklace around my neck.
“Ugh!” Tiffany said and when I looked over, her eyes were red and she wiped her tears. I never thought I’d see the day when she’d cry in front of me and I couldn’t help but touch the necklace a few times like I wanted to show off in front of her.
She was so mad that she looked like she’d rip the necklace from my neck and claim it as her own.
I should’ve felt bad for her at that point, but she had taken something more valuable to me than the necklace.
Now that the auction had come to an end, Margot said a few last words before Mr Aldridge joined her up on stage to thank everyone who had participated. He stood there and said a few lovely things about her, but all I could think about was that there was something Maddox wasn’t telling me and I couldn’t wait to find out.
The dance floor was right on the other side of the grand hall and when the slow music began, some couples were already rushing over there as others had dinner.
As expected, Maddox got up from his seat and held out his hand for me once again.
“Dance with me,” he said it like a gentleman.
I glanced at Grayson, whose forehead had turned a bit red as he was still stuck on the fact that he’d lost out on that necklace.
I then looked back up at Maddox and I smiled as I placed my hand in his.
He led me to the dance floor, where everyone’s movements were so elegant. He placed his hand around my waist and mine went around his neck, the fingers of the other ones intertwining perfectly even though his hand was bigger.
As we began to move to the music, he constantly glanced at my collarbone. “Are you staring at the necklace or my cleavage?”
He smirked. “It doesn’t matter what I’m staring at because everything looks good and just for your information, I was staring at the necklace. It really looks good on you.”
I smiled with hesitation. “Thanks, but I really don’t think I deserve it.”
“After what my sister put you through, you deserve more than that necklace. Look at the two of them still in their seats. I bet she doesn’t want to dance with him. Why would she?”
I sighed as I looked over. “She’s so mad at him.”
“Don’t tell me you feel bad for him,” he teased me.
“No.” My voice was firm as I looked back at him.
I was telling the truth. I didn’t feel bad for him at all because I knew that had that necklace ended up him, it would’ve been for her and the fact that neither of them got what they wanted was so satisfying.
“And here we go again,” Maddox said while looking back at our table.
I looked over as well and spotted Grayson on his feet, holding out his hand as he asked Tiffany to dance. That was nothing new and I was certain it wouldn’t lead to anything but it all changed when he gave her that charming smile. He was so sweet that he even got down on one knee. She finally flashed a smile like that had made her heart melt.
There it was, the jealousy building in my chest. I was already working so hard to practice some boundaries, but seeing that after their argument was a reminder that they were just inseparable.
“Are you okay?” Maddox asked with concern.
“I’m fine.”
“Not here. I’ll tell you later in our suite upstairs. It’s something I’ve wanted to say for a while now. And before you beg me to tell you right now, I won’t.”
