Invisible to My First Love (Harper and Maddox) novel Chapter 111

Chapter 111

Harper

My warning must’ve meant nothing to Grayson as he grinned and continued dancing with me.

“Come on, Harp. You know you don’t mean that.”

“Actually, I do.” My voice was steady despite dying inside. “Stick to daytime only. The last thing I want is for my boyfriend to think there’s something going on between you and I.”

He chuckled dismissively as he looked over at Tiffany dancing with Maddox. “Don’t say that. Never in a million years will that ever happen. You and I are friends and that’s all we’ll ever be. I love my wife and he knows that.”

His words struck me to the heart, but I fought harder to keep my voice steady. “Even if it’s not because of him, please don’t come over when it’s too late. There’s no way I’d ever show up to your place at 1 AM.”

“But you live alone.”

“You’re right, but I’m not alone. Even if I was, I wouldn’t say anything different.”

He sighed, his expression serious this time. “Harp, what’s gotten into you? Come on. it’s me.”

“Exactly.” My voice was sharp as I pulled away from him to widen the distance just a little bit. We stood out from everyone else as we were the only ones not dancing, but I didn’t care.

“So this is how it’s going to be?” Each word slowly came from his lips as he took a step forward to shorten the distance. “Now that you’re dating, we can’t be close anymore?”

I took a step back. “You need to-”

“No. You better listen to me.” He took a step forward again as he towered over me. “I didn’t expect to hear this from you.

Ever since I told you that I wasn’t selling that house, I wanted us to go to the old treehouse so we could go through some of our old stuff that’s been left untouched. That’s why I’ve been calling and texting you, but you haven’t been picking my calls or replying to my texts. At least I tried to make it work.”

“Wait, you’re getting it all wrong. I just meant to say that-

“I get it. No need to explain.”

“This is a dance floor, people!” Adrian said, holding my hand and pulling me along to dance with him.

I kept my gaze a little bit longer on Grayson until I lost sight of him in the dancing crowd. I hated that he’d misunderstood me. I’d been certain that what I’d asked was pretty clear.

Even though the talk didn’t turn out exactly the way I thought it would, I was so proud of myself that I grinned, but it faded when I spotted him again and he was dancing with Tiffany. He possessively held her tight and she grinned, wrapping her arms around his neck as they shared a kiss. It was always so passionate between them.

“Jealous?” Adrian teased me.

I snapped out of it and faced him, my eyes narrowing. “What?”

“For a second there, it seemed like you were wishing that it was you and Maddox right now.”

I forced a smile. “You’re thinking too much.”

“I’ll let you go to your man soon.” He gestured with his head towards Maddox, who was dancing with Kate. “But first, I really need to talk to you about Ella.”

I rolled my eyes. “Of course. What else could you possibly want to talk about?”

Just like Aiden asked about Zoey, he began to ask about Ella and the guy she was spending the weekend with. The only difference was that this time, my attention was split between him and Grayson dancing with Tiffany. He even stood behind her as she rested her head against his chest. He must’ve whispered something sweet in her ear because she giggled.

Then, he glanced at me as he said something else and her gaze instantly landed on me. Her expression was scornful and when she looked up at him a few seconds later, they both burst into laughter. Whatever it was they’d said to each other, I was the topic of discussion. It made me feel like I was the joke.

I didn’t even have to listen to everything Adrian had to say since I knew he wanted the same thing as his brother.

I just wanted to get off the dance floor, so I cut him off and said, “I’ll tell her you said hi.”

He smiled with relief. “Really? Thanks.”

He should’ve stopped there, but he kept going on and on about how it bothered him that Ella was spending the weekend with another guy.

I barely paid attention as I constantly glanced at Grayson and Tiffany. They didn’t even do too much since they couldn’t be all over each other the way they would in a club, but everything they did was still enough to make me feel like there was something stuck in my throat. They maintained eye contact now that they weren’t looking at me. The way he was looking at her was once again a strong reminder that he’d never look at anyone else like that.

I was thinking about how he’d quickly misunderstood my request when we switched partners again and this time, I found myself in Maddox’s arms. I hadn’t even realized he’d come that close while dancing with Kate.

Despite everything I felt while watching Grayson and Tiffany, being in Maddox’s arms felt…safe.

“Hey,” I managed to say. I couldn’t even smile. With him, I didn’t have to pretend.

“Everything okay?”

“I told Grayson not to come over to my place when it’s late.”

He smirked with a nod of approval. “That’s a good girl.”

Hearing him say that in his deep voice and that dominant aura was all it took to push Grayson dancing with Tiffany at the back of my head.

Suddenly, his grip on my waist tightened as he held me real close against his body and brought his lips near my ear to whisper, his warm breath sending a pleasant shiver down my spine.

“The last thing you want is for them to see you so broken, right?”

The food was so delicious that I wished I still had more room in my stomach, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t take one more bite. I feared that I would explode and my dress was a bit too tight around the waist. I couldn’t live with that discomfort
