Chapter 91
Harper
As I adjusted my robe a little more to better hide the short dress inside, I swallowed hard.
I still couldn’t understand how Grayson was at my place at 1 AM, but as much as I hated to admit it, it was a pleasant surprise.
I waited by the door as his footsteps approached the front porch, holding my breath as I listened to my heart racing.
The moment he knocked on the door, I covered my mouth with a silent chuckle, then gently smacked my lips as I told myself not to get too excited as I still didn’t know why he’d come.
Composing myself, I finally opened the door for him and his scent immediately wafted its way towards me.
There he was, in a grey suit that made him look like he was on his way to the office.
He leaned against the doorframe without saying a word, but he wiggled his eyebrows once with a charming smile that made me forget just how many horrible things he’d said to me.
“Looks like somebody’s still awake.”
“Hey,” I managed to say, my voice steady. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here, especially at this hour.”
my dad. He nodded in agreement. “I was actually asleep an hour ago but received an urgent phone call from There’s somewhere he needed to go but felt he wouldn’t be able to make it because he doesn’t feel too well. Just so you know, since I had to drive through this road to get to my destination, I had the option to call and tell you I was outside, but I didn’t want to wake you in case you were fast asleep. I thought it was better to come here and take my chances by knocking on your door. And now that I see you,” he glanced at my neck and collarbone, “it was totally worth it.”
My grip tightened on the doorknob, telling myself not to get any ideas. That wasn’t Maddox, it was Grayson.
“Can I come in?”
The two of us were still in a bad place, but I couldn’t imagine saying no to him. He still had that effect on me even when I tried to fight it at times.
“Sure.” I took a few steps back to make way for him.
“By the way,” he paused, coming in and closing the door behind him, “I knew Maddox wasn’t here because I didn’t see any car apart from yours. Otherwise, I wouldn’t show up at this hour. I’m not looking to throw punches with my brother–in–law.”
“That wouldn’t happen,” I assured him as I took a seat and crossed my legs. “He knows that you and I are-”
“Harp, things are different now,” he sat right beside me. “Showing up here at 1 AM might be inappropriate. It was enough when I came over that time and found you two alone.”
He looked to the side, furrowing his eyebrows like the image in his head disgusted him, but he hid it quickly.
I nodded in agreement, but said, “If you really have somewhere to be and it’s urgent, why did you stop here?”

While facing the wall across from us, he scooted towards me until there was no space between us. I swallowed hard, unable to move any further. Even if there had been room for that, I knew I wouldn’t have moved.
“Yeah, you told me that before.” I glanced at his gorgeous side profile before also facing the wall across from us.
I was so flustered that I stared at his lips a bit too long before looking away. “Me? What do I have to do with this?”
