Chapter 95

Maddox

“And what do you actually want to say?” Grayson sighed with amusement.

My eyes narrowed. “Enough of you going after Harper whenever it suits you.”

He parted his lips but took a few seconds to let the words out and when he did, he glanced to the side, his tone defensive. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I scoffed, taking a sip from my glass of wine. “How about I refresh your memory? You’ve known Harper for years and back then, she was nothing but a friend. She could never be anything more, not when she looked like that. Then she comes back to town looking all sexy. When I saw her again at your party, I wanted her so badly, so did you.”

His head shot back at me with a glare. “You better watch it.”

“Why should I? It’s not like I’m telling any lies. I’ve been watching you for a long time. You know the effect you have on her and she gets excited whenever you act a certain way. You feed off of that. You chose to be blind to how Tiffany cheated on you, even turning against Harper. Now that she’s mine, you show up at her place to talk about some shit, at I AM.”

He poked his cheek. “You don’t know what you’re-”

“Shut the fuck up, Grayson,” I leaned forward to whisper. “My fist should be landing on your jaw right now, but I’ll let it slide this time. Whatever it is you’re trying to do, cut it out. Is that clear?”

He sneered, his chair squeaking a little as he pushed it back and rose to his feet. “I have to go.”

“Same here.” I smirked, getting up, too. “I have to pick up my girl. I’m taking her shopping. I can only hope that we make it to the store soon enough. She’s so freaky at times that she just wants to have her way.”

I paid attention to his body language as I said it and I caught his jaw clench at the same time as his fist.

“See?” I sighed.

“What the hell are you talking about now?” he whispered, his voice irritated.

“I’ll see you at the ball.”

I turned around and was ready to leave, when he spoke with urgency.

“Not yet. Just a few more minutes.”

I closed my eyes and smirked with satisfaction. Of course, he needed me to make him look good. I had that power over him. And because I still wanted to keep up appearances, I turned back around and there were already a few people approaching the two of us.

He proudly introduced me to them as he spoke so highly of me.

I had to hold in my laugh at how he carried himself. He barely even made eye contact with me. I was glad he finally knew that I was watching him.

After exchanging a few business cards, I finally excused myself.

As I made my way out, I looked back and everyone was all smiles while still with Grayson because thanks to him, they were able to talk to me.

During the drive to Harper’s place, I had my earpiece in when I received a call from my father. I didn’t have to assume that all he wanted to talk about was work. Those days were gone.

“Dad.”

“I didn’t know you were going to attend that conference,” he said from the other end of the line.

“I guess news travels fast.” I grinned.

“Of course it does. In just a few minutes, I’ve seen more about you being there than about Grayson who was the last speaker.”

I gave a short laugh, thinking about how I’d shown up there just to warn him and inform him that I was watching him.

“I’m glad I showed up,” I said. “It was absolutely worth it.”

“Did it motivate you to work on your speech for the ball?”

I huffed. “Nope. I haven’t even worked on that yet.”

“You should. The event is just this Saturday.”

“I’ll figure it out.” My voice was dripping with confidence. “I always do.”

“Of course you do. I’m not doing anything on Saturday morning, so we can go to your mom’s grave. About the flowers, I was thinking of Carnation Minerva.”

My lips curved into a smile. “Mom’s favorite.”

“Yes, I thought it would be appropriate to get something like that.”

I heard what he said. It just took me a while to speak as I thought about how he still remembered.

It didn’t even seem to matter to him that I said nothing in response.

Harper stepped out of the house in a floral dress, her hair in a messy bun with no makeup on and she looked flawless.

“I spoke to my dad on the way to your place. We’re going to my mom’s grave on Saturday at 10 in the morning. He even remembers her favorite flowers.”

No matter what, I didn’t want to show it, so I cleared my throat to quickly change the topic.
