**Chapter 18: Helen, I Trust You**
Yet, despite the tumult of emotions swirling within him, he quickly suppressed them.
With a determined expression, Felix cleared his throat, his voice firm yet tinged with an underlying vulnerability. “Enough of this talk. I’ve already told you, my old body has been trapped in this state for so many years. I’ve grown accustomed to it. Helen has just returned home. What purpose does it serve to dwell on this now?”
His gaze shifted to Helen, and he spoke with careful consideration. “Helen, please don’t waste your precious time on me. Let’s just focus on our meal.”
Deep down, he was acutely aware of the condition of his legs. The last thing he wanted was for Helen to attempt to treat him, only to find herself disappointed if her efforts fell short. The weight of such disappointment could crush her spirit, and he couldn’t bear the thought of that.
Years of paralysis had taught him to accept his limitations, and he felt no need to impose that burden on her young shoulders.
Alexander and Rebecca exchanged glances, both understanding the unspoken message in Felix’s words. Their hearts raced with a flicker of hope, yet they held back, unwilling to place any unrealistic expectations upon Helen.
Helen, however, was undeterred. She placed her cutlery down, her eyes softening with determination. “Grandpa, it’s my responsibility to care for you,” she stated firmly.
Her voice was steady and calm, radiating an air of confidence that suggested she had already taken control of the situation. “Would you mind if I examined your legs?”
For reasons he couldn’t quite articulate, Felix felt an unfamiliar urge to trust her. His fingers, resting on the armrest of his wheelchair, instinctively tightened. A flicker of hope ignited within him, and he felt his chest rise and fall with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.
But he steeled himself, forcing a nod of consent.
Helen knelt beside him, gently lifting the blanket that covered his legs. With careful precision, she pressed her fingers against several key acupoints, her touch both gentle and assured.
After a moment of concentration, she stood up, her expression brightening. “It’s not a serious issue. I can help you recover.”
“Really?” Rebecca gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as tears brimmed in her eyes, a mixture of disbelief and hope flooding her heart.
Alexander’s eyes glistened with unshed tears as well. His voice trembled with excitement, stumbling over his words as he showered Helen with praise, unable to contain his joy.
Felix stared down at his legs, a sense of disbelief washing over him.
Cure?
It had been three long years since he had even dared to entertain such a thought.
Wendy, observing the family’s enthusiasm, felt a sharp pang of irritation with every word of admiration directed at Helen. Each compliment felt like a needle piercing her ears, igniting a fire of jealousy within her.
