Chapter 237

Once Sebastian returned to the lounge, he immediately bent down to pick up the pen from the

trash can.

His pale slender fingers gripped the fountain pen tightly for quite some time before he took a tissue to wipe away the ink that had leaked out.

Then, he screwed the cap back on and opened a drawer. There was a sapphire-blue velvet box inside, and it was a box he had prepared especially to keep his fountain pen.

When Valeria returned to the ward, Thomas was still there. Upon seeing her, he stood and greeted her, “Jane.”

Margaret was lying on the hospital bed with her eyes closed. But once Valeria walked over to hold Margaret’s hand, Margaret opened her eyes and clasped Valeria’s hand.

Then, Margaret commented, “It took you some time to refill your water.’

“Jane, could you come out with me for a second? There’s something I’d like to say to you,”

Thomas said.

Valeria also had a few things to say to him. However, when the two of them left the ward, the light in Margaret’s eyes faded.

Thomas cleared his throat and said guiltily, “Jane, I’d like to talk to you about your grandma’s sickness. I think we should just use the money from her savings, and once that runs out, we’ll bring her home.

“I’ve asked around about her sickness, so I know there’s no cure. Hence, I don’t think we should let her suffer for too long.”

Valeria answered, “Just like what you did with Grandpa, you mean? Grandpa could have lived on. It’s been eight years since Mr. Goodall from our hometown was diagnosed with leukemia. Isn’t he still doing well?

“You’re just doing this so that Granny won’t be a burden to you and Jennifer. You plan on killing Grandma just like how you killed Grandpa, by forcing him to drink some kind of poison.

Thomas grew anxious and immediately rushed to defend himself. “Jane, what are you saying?

You can’t just say things like that, and it’s not like I forced Dad to drink it.”

“You don’t need to worry about Granny’s illness. She has a big chance of surviving this, so if you still have some conscience left in you, you should come and visit. Also, don’t bring Jennifer here again to upset her,” Valeria said.

Thomas added, “Jane, I’m your uncle. How can you speak to me like that? Your grandma’s also my mom, so of course I’ll come by to take care of her.

“We can always put those two apartments up for sale through an agent. That way, we’ll be able to buy your grandma some supplements.”

Valeria commented, “At the end of the day, you’re still fixated on the compensation from the demolition of that apartment.”

Thomas waved his hand. “Alright. I’ll leave now and come back again tomorrow.”

Suddenly, Valeria said, “When I was young, you used to pick me up from school. When my classmates bullied me for not having a father, you went to confront their parents.

“You’d stand in front of me and scold their child for having no manners. Back then, I used to think that my uncle was the coolest and most amazing person in the world…”

Thomas had just taken two steps forward when he paused midstep.

After a long while, he finally walked away.

Valeria had barely slept at night, and she had been keeping an eye on Margaret’s condition.

Valeria had been terrified Margaret would not be able to accept the fact that she had cancer and would overthink things, so Valeria had been keeping it a secret from Margaret.

In the morning, Valeria went out to buy food.

Margaret drank a cup of soy milk and ate some ravioli. Everything seemed normal.

Valeria said, “Granny, don’t be scared. I’ll always be here with you.”

The surgery had already been scheduled, so Valeria had gone to Joseph’s office to sign the necessary agreements and discuss the entire procedure in detail.

Two days later, at around 10:00 am, Margaret suddenly said, “I’m so scared of being a burden to you.”
