Seeing the apology letter he’d spent all night agonizing over tossed away like garbage, Leopold finally snapped. “You want me to kneel in front of you and write another one? Larissa, don’t get ahead of yourself! So you had one good night at the party. Do you really think that means we’re desperate to have you back?”
Even Vivica’s patience had worn thin. “Larissa, you’re going too far. Leopold has been punished. Your father slapped him in front of all those guests last night. He was utterly humiliated. And now he’s apologized. Why are you still clinging to such a trivial matter?”
Honora smiled to herself. Yes, fight. This was perfect. Try to repair their relationship with Larissa now? In their dreams.
A mocking smile played on Larissa’s lips. “Look at you. A tiny bit of humiliation is an unbearable tragedy in your eyes. Do you have any idea how much suffering I’ve endured over the past twenty years? Your so-called apologies are nothing but a pathetic, arrogant joke.”
“Stop bringing up how much you suffered!” Leopold shot back impatiently. “The past is the past! We can give you a life most people can only dream of now. You should be letting go of what happened, not clinging to it!”
Larissa’s eyes, once calm, were now as cold as a frozen lake. She stared at Leopold, her voice low and deliberate. “Fine. If that’s how you feel, then I won’t beat around the bush any longer. I will never forget a single moment of the hardship I endured. And I will never, ever forgive you for what you’ve done.”
Her gaze shifted, locking onto Vivica. “I told you before, Aunt Vivica, I’ve known for a long time that you and Paxton knew I was your biological daughter. You knew, and you left me to drift, abandoned. You only brought me back because you needed someone to take Honora’s place and marry the crippled Haskell. So let me make my goal perfectly clear: I came back to destroy everything you hold dear. I will make you feel what it’s like to have nothing, to be bullied, to be completely and utterly powerless.”
