"And what are your intentions?"
"The engagement stands. I will marry the true Judson heiress."
Zoltan's hand paused mid-air. "Do you understand your current situation? You're crippled, yet you want to marry a girl with nothing to her name? Since your accident, countless people have been pressuring me to name a new heir."
Haskell's expression remained unchanged. "And do you truly intend to replace me, Grandpa? Who else in this family has the ability to make the Palmers stronger, to ensure our name continues to dominate Regal City?"
Zoltan grunted. "You're certainly confident in yourself."
Haskell picked up another black piece and placed it deliberately on the board. "Which is why I am also confident in my choice of a wife."
"You've met this Judson girl?"
"I have."
"And you've made up your mind after such a short time?"
"One look was all it took."
Zoltan was thoughtful. "When I arranged your engagement to Honora, that highly acclaimed young lady, you showed no particular feelings one way or the other. It was impossible to tell if you were pleased or not. Yet you seem quite keen on this new girl."
"A near-death experience changes a man's perspective," Haskell said with a faint smile. "I've come to realize that some things in life are worth following your heart for."
Zoltan grunted again. "I'll attend the reception tomorrow night myself. I'm curious to see what's so special about this girl that you've set your mind on her so quickly."
Haskell thought of Larissa's wild, untamable spirit and smiled. "I have a feeling you're going to be very pleased with your future granddaughter-in-law, Grandpa."
