The throbbing pain in his right leg was a constant, brutal reminder that he was crippled. He didn't know how he was going to face his family, or his future.

As if on cue, a knock came at his door.

"Finley, are you awake?" It was Honora.

He ignored her, burying his head in his hands. He wasn't ready to explain.

"Finley? Dad wanted me to ask if you're not going to the office today."

He glanced at the dozen missed calls from his assistant on his phone and still said nothing.

After a long silence from the other side of the door, he curled into a ball, overwhelmed by misery.

His phone rang again. Annoyed, he was about to reject the call when he saw the name: [Larissa].

He hesitated, a knot of fear tightening in his stomach. He didn't have the courage to hang up on her. After a few rings, he answered.

Her cheerful voice came through the line.

"Come and get me in a bit. We're going out. Haskell wants a word with you."

Finley frowned. "A word about what?"

"About you telling people he's only being nice to me because he thinks I can heal his legs."

Finley grit his teeth. "Why did you tell him that?"

"Is there a problem? You're just a pawn in the game I'm playing with him."

Finley seethed. Her words were infuriating, but he was powerless against her.

"I understand," he finally ground out.
