“Who is it?” Stella called out.

Erica hadn’t responded yet, but a familiar voice rang out from the hallway. “Hello, Ms. Spencer. We’re here about the murder–for–hire case.”

Stella recognized him instantly–it was the team leader from the interrogation room.

Stella kept her expression calm and said coolly, “Erica, let them in.”

“You’re not here to take Stella away, are you?” Erica blurted, clearly worried and protective.

Just one trip to the station had nearly cost Stella her sight. Erica didn’t even want to think about what could happen if she had to go through it again.

The team leader, still standing outside, quickly understood Erica’s concerns. His voice softened, no longer carrying the harshness from the interrogation room. “I’m sorry. This all happened because of an issue within our department,” he said, sounding genuinely apologetic.

“We’ll cover all of Ms. Spencer’s hospital expenses and any related costs,” he added.

“Hold on,” Erica interrupted him. “We don’t need your money. Just clear Stella’s name and get to the bottom of this. That’s all we care about.”

“That’s exactly why we’re here,” the team leader responded, hesitating for a moment before asking, “Why don’t we go inside and talk to Ms. Spencer directly?”

“Fine,” Erica grumbled, reluctantly stepping aside to let them in.

The officers entered the hospital room and took their seats one by one by Stella’s bedside.

Erica settled in right next to Stella, clinging to her arm and silently lending her strength.

An uncomfortable silence hung in the air between the two sides.

After a long pause, the team leader cleared his throat. “Ms. Spencer, I want to start by apologizing for the harm this situation has caused you.”

“It’s fine,” Stella replied, shaking her head. The person responsible had already been dealt with, and she wasn’t going to dwell on it.

The team leader seemed genuinely relieved by her response. If Stella had made a bigger deal out of it, the whole law enforcement department would have been shaken up, and he would’ve been dragged down with it.

“Now, let me update you on the investigation,” the team leader continued, shifting to a more formal tone. “We’re still looking into where that two million dollars went.”

He paused, brow furrowing. “It seems someone is trying to mislead our investigation, which is why we haven’t been able to trace the money’s source.”

“Can you find out who it is?” Stella pressed.

The team leader gave a resigned sigh. “If only we knew who it was, this would all be much easier.”

Whoever was interfering with the investigation, whether the real culprit or an accomplice, was making things more complicated. But at least it showed that Stella was innocent.

The team leader might be in the dark, but Stella already had a suspect in mind–Ernest. Thinking back to that conversation in the detention room, a flash of sadness crossed her face.

They had been married for seven years. Yet there her husband was, trying to ruin her based on nothing but his own guesses. His hatred for her was that deep.

“Ms. Spencer?” the team leader asked, snapping her back to reality.

Her sadness had vanished so quickly that the team leader almost wondered if he’d imagined it. “Do you have any idea who might be behind this?” he added.

“Yes,” Stella replied, her voice steady but burning with anger. “I think you should focus your investigation on the Lloyd family.”

“The Lloyd family?” The team leader blinked in surprise. He was well aware of the complicated relationships between Stella, Ernest, and Sylvia.

He had initially assumed it was the wife seeking revenge, but now it seemed like the husband might have tried to kill his wife to elevate his mistress. Of course, the truth would only come out after the investigation.

“Alright,” Stella said. “Right now?”

“Not today,” the team leader answered, shaking his head. “We’re not going to make you go through that while you’re still recovering. Tomorrow, I’ll come by and take you to see him.”

“Alright,” Stella nodded.

The team leader and his team left shortly after, and with Erica looking after her, Stella finally managed to sleep.

The night breeze swept through, bringing a peaceful calm.

No one noticed the car at the hospital entrance. The driver crouched down, waiting for the police to leave. Then he hurried out and ran straight to the private patient rooms.

“Why did you have to meddle and make things even more complicated?” Sylvia snapped, her voice filled with irritation.

Inside the hospital room, Sylvia was furious after hearing that Theodore had tried to interfere with the investigation.

“I was just trying to help,” Theodore mumbled, his usual arrogance gone. “Think about it–if they find out where the money went, then she’s in the clear, right?”

Sylvia shot him a cold look. “You’ve probably ruined my whole plan now.”

When she first set all this in motion, she never thought she could actually pin the crime on Stella.

Her real goal wasn’t just to make Ernest feel guilty and rush into marrying her–she certainly intended to ruin her reputation.

At first, everything went exactly as she planned–Stella’s name dragged through the mud. Even if the truth came out, no one would believe it. The “real culprit” image was already firmly in place. Reversing it would be nearly impossible.

But things hadn’t settled yet, and public outrage hadn’t reached its peak. Theodore’s interference was like announcing to everyone that Stella wasn’t the real culprit before the truth even came out.

And it was obvious who everyone’s anger would be aimed at next.
