“My mother,” Hugh said, burying his face in his hands. “She saw right through it.”

Hugh’s mom had noticed a large sum of money, so when her son was arrested, she’d put two and two together and knew exactly what he’d gotten involved in.

That was why she’d dragged her daughter–in–law and her grandchild along, traveling all this way just to try and talk some sense into him.

Even now, the officers who’d witnessed it could still remember Hugh’s mom’s words from the day before.

“Our family may be poor, but the government has always helped us. Without those monthly support payments, we would’ve starved by now. How could you do something illegal?” Hugh’s mom said, her voice filled with worry and disappointment.

“Son, how could you betray your country like this? How am I ever supposed to face those officials who’ve been helping our family?” she continued, her eyes filled with shame and sorrow.

That was two million dollars–enough to secure a lifetime of comfort. With that money, their family could have put their struggles behind them for good.

But Hugh’s mom didn’t show the slightest hint of greed. Instead, she came all this way just to try and stop Hugh from making a horrible mistake.

People might call her naive, but it was exactly people like her–honest, hardworking people–that made this country strong and prosperous.

Everyone admired Hugh’s mom, but there was no forgiveness for Hugh’s crime.

While Stella couldn’t forgive him, she still wanted to do something for his family. After thinking for a moment, she said, “The two million dollars you received will be confiscated, but I’ll personally help your family until your child is grown and able to support you.”

As soon as she finished speaking, the room fell silent. Everyone just stared at her, totally stunned. No one had expected Stella, the victim here, to make such a decision.

If it were anyone else, they might have felt some sympathy, but they would never give money to the family of someone who tried to harm them.

“Stella,” Erica tugged at her sleeve, looking uneasy. “Are you sure about this?”

“It’s alright,” Stella offered with a gentle smile, trying to reassure her. “I have my reasons.”

Yes, she respected Hugh’s mom, but she also had her own reasons. Once the word got out, the last of the negative opinions about her would be wiped away.

Helping out Hugh’s family and fixing up her reputation at the same time. It was a win–win.

Suddenly, there was a loud bang. Stella jumped in surprise. “What’s going on? What happened?”

Before anyone could answer her, a voice from nearby cut through the tension and explained what had happened.

“Ms. Spencer, I’ll never forget the kindness you’ve shown me,” Hugh said, his voice thick with emotion.

“I must’ve been out of my mind to accuse you. If I ever get out, I swear I’ll make it up to you,” he continued, his words trembling with regret.

The others made no move to stop him when he knelt down. Without Hugh working, his family would have to survive on government assistance, scraping by,

But with Stella’s help, at least they wouldn’t have to struggle as much–their lives would improve.

“It’s nothing,” Stella said with a gentle smile. “I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing it because I respect your mother.”

“Alright, that’s enough,” the team leader said, helping Hugh to his feet. “Get up. Use your time inside to turn your life around. When you’re out, make sure you live a decent life.”

“I will, I promise. I’ll turn my life around.” Hugh nodded eagerly.

Once the questioning was finished, the officers escorted Hugh out.

“I promise,” Stella replied. They didn’t talk much more. After hanging up, Stella and Erica got into the team leader’s car and headed straight for the hospital.

“Captain Lance!” At the hospital, just as they entered the ward, the officer who had been handling the injured man came over to find the team leader, Adam Lance.

“How’s the patient doing?” Adam asked.

“He’s stable now,” the officer replied, but his face turned serious. “We have a situation. As soon as the patient woke up, he started yelling that someone was trying to kill him.”

Adam froze, his mind going blank.

Just had a hitman case a couple days ago, and now–what, another murder?‘ he grumbled to himself. ‘Seriously, is murder just following me around these days?‘

Although solving these cases would look good for his record, it also meant crime was on the rise in his district. If there were a few more cases like this, the higher–ups would start asking questions.

With that, Adam let out a sigh and rubbed his temples, clearly exasperated. “Do we know what’s going on?”

“No,” the officer replied, shaking his head. “As soon as he woke up, he blacked out again. The doctor says it could take a while before he’s fully awake. I just wanted to update you.”

“Got it,” Adam replied. He quickly gave his orders, “Keep an eye on him. I’m worried someone might be after him. Call for backup and post a couple of guards.”

“Got it,the officer nodded, hurrying off to carry out the orders.

Stella said warmly, “Since this is urgent, go ahead and take care of things. Don’t worry about uswe’ll be fine

here.”
