Erica and Stella turned around to see two guys standing outside the door–Michael and Cameron, shoulder to shoulder, looking at them like they were about to put two criminals on trial.
They’d rushed to the hospital as soon as they heard what happened to Sylvia, and when they found out Stella was there too, they showed up looking ready to give her a piece of their mind.
Michael and Cameron were thinking, ‘If nobody had done anything shady, how could Sylvia have just fallen down the stairs like that?‘
Clearly, in their minds, Stella was already guilty.
“Stella, just how far are you willing to go for Ernest?” Michael was the first to attack. “Sylvia’s one of the nicest people around, and you could still do this to her? Honestly, you make me sick.”
“If Sylvia doesn’t wake up this time, I swear I’ll never let you get away with it!” he added.
Cameron followed up, “Ms. Spencer, I’ll give it to you–your jewelry skills are top–notch. But when it comes to your character, I really can’t respect you.”
Before Stella could even react, Erica burst out laughing. “Seriously, are your mouths just extensions of your asses? All you do is spout bullshit.”
“Erica, you’re just enabling her!” Michael shot back. “If it weren’t for her, Sylvia wouldn’t have needed to be rescued again.”
Stella was dumbfounded. “What does her being rescued have to do with me?”
“Stella, cut the act. Everyone knows Sylvia’s always been the thorn in your side. Now that she’s down, you couldn’t wait to take her out and snatch Ernest back, right?” Michael shot her a look like he’d already got her
number.
Erica actually laughed out loud. “You know, even a judge can’t hand down a sentence without proof. Are you just living in your own fantasy world?”
Stella replied coolly, not missing a beat. “Honestly, believe whatever you want. This isn’t on me. Blame whoever you like, but…”
She paused, her expression souring as she snapped, “Just quit showing up and trying to disgust me!”
“Disgust you?” Michael shot back, eyes wide in surprise. ·
He was ready to go off again, but Erica was already done with his nonsense. She strode right up to him, hand raised. “Guess the last time I slapped some sense into you, it didn’t stick, huh?”
“Erica, you think I’m scared? Don’t you dare come any closer, or-” Michael started puffing up, but before he could get another word out, Erica’s hand landed square across his cheek with a loud smack.
Just like that, all his bravado disappeared, and his eyes suddenly looked a whole lot clearer.

Cameron’s face shifted as he stood to the side–he wasn’t looking so cocky anymore.

If he had to take that slap in front of everyone, he’d wish the ground would swallow him up. The humiliation would be so complete, he’d never live it down.
Watching Michael run off, clutching his face and spouting threats, Erica narrowed her eyes at Cameron. He immediately caught her drift–no way he was sticking around to get smacked too–and turned and left in a flash.
Erica snorted. “Figures. Everyone who hangs out with that loser is just a bunch of spineless idiots.”
Erica’s words landed right as Simon walked in. He kinda froze, looking so awkward, not even sure if he should say hi or just stand there like an extra.
Stella saw how uncomfortable he was and stepped in, breaking the tension. “Mr. Wood, was there something you wanted?”
Since Daisy was his niece, Stella didn’t mind cutting him a little slack.
Simon was about to say something, but Erica cut him off with a smirk. “Seriously, what else could you want? Let me guess–you came to jump all over Stella for some dumb reason, just like those two losers.”
“No way! That’s not what I’m here for, you’re totally wrong!” Simon spluttered, looking flustered.
Worried Stella might get the wrong idea, Simon quickly blurted out, “I knew those guys were coming to mess with you, so I hurried over to try and stop them.”
Erica let out a mock surprise. “Oh? Well, even from a bad crowd, someone good can pop up every now and then.”
Simon ignored her teasing. His eyes stayed fixed on Stella. When he saw she didn’t seem to have misunderstood him, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
He couldn’t explain it, but just the thought of Stella misunderstanding him and being annoyed made his chest ache with discomfort.
Meeting Simon’s nervous look, Stella was a little confused, but didn’t think much of it. She just calmly said, “Thanks.
“No worries,” Simon said.
After that quick back–and–forth, a pang of awkward silence hung in the air.
Erica raised an eyebrow. “You still here?”
“I…” Simon shifted, looking like he wanted to speak up, but was totally at a loss.

He paused for a second. Realizing she probably meant Ernest, and that Stella was already set to go to Irene’s PTA meeting, Simon figured it all out.
Stella couldn’t help but laugh. “Got it. Don’t worry, I’m not about to get mixed up with them. I only bother with Simon because of Daisy.”
Just thinking about that super–adorable kid had Erica grinning sweetly. “For real, Daisy is an absolute little stunner. If only we could kidnap her for a weekend and spoil her rotten.”
“Then give me a couple of days–I’ll hit Daisy up and we can take her out for a little fun,” Stella suggested.
“I’m down for that,” Erica replied.
They kept chatting, and before they knew it, noon rolled around. The sun was blazing outside, making the air thick and sticky, and even the breeze carried a hint of scorching heat.
“It’s way too hot out there. You just stay put, I’ll grab us some food and bring it back,” Erica said.
Before Stella could even protest, Erica was already on her feet and heading out the door.
It wasn’t long before Erica came back, lugging takeout from the cafeteria. She set everything up on the tiny table by Stella’s bed and immediately started doting on her, making sure she ate.
“Erica, I can do it myself,” Stella grumbled, feeling more and more like a helpless kid–she couldn’t even take

a sip of water without Erica hovering.
“So, your eyesight’s totally back?” Erica asked.
:
“Almost. Things are still kind of fuzzy, but I can see most stuff,” Stella answered.
“Yeah, that’s still not ‘better,” Erica huffed, refusing to let up.
In the end, faced with Erica’s relentless bossiness, Stella just gave in.
