“The narrow, winding path leading over there wasn’t even a real road—it was just something the locals had hacked out themselves.

Ashton wouldn’t let us charge in all at once, afraid we’d spook whoever was hiding out there. So, only the Young Master and three others went in. It’s a long way inside, and none of them have come back yet. Not a single soul.”

“How long have you been waiting? Why aren’t you going in already? Oh my God!” Tiana stared at the blurry outline of the dam’s floodgate ahead, a hulking monster in the mist, and all she could think about was Parker and Valerie. She was shaking, barely holding it together.

Whitney grabbed her trembling arm, taking a shaky breath to steady herself. “Get me a bodyguard to show the way—I’m going in. Tiana, you stay here.”

“The top of the dam is way too dangerous! Whitney—”

Whitney turned and snapped, “I need to know what happened to them! It’s been too long. If Ashton’s stuck and Valerie still has a chance—I’m not letting her die out there…”

As she spoke, Tiana’s eyes grew huge, locked on the rush of water pouring from the floodgate above. Suddenly, she screamed, “VALERIE!”

In the blink of an eye, Whitney whipped her head around—

Someone was thrown from the top of the dam, tumbling through the mist and crashing down into the churning, icy river below. There was a piercing scream, swallowed instantly by the roaring water.

“Valerie?” Whitney’s heart seemed to stop. She dove toward the edge of the muddy path, peering down.

A bodyguard grabbed her hard. “Ms. Valentine, it’s not safe!”

“Did Valerie fall?” Tiana was sobbing, shaking her head in disbelief. “I saw something orange—Valerie had an orange jacket…”
