Chapter 109: I Want You Dead

Perry’s Perspective

“Why on earth would you poison yourself?” I asked again, my voice steady but filled with confusion as Phoebe stayed silent, her eyes avoiding mine. “If your intention was to kill me, there were countless other ways you could have made me ingest poison.”

Now, the truth was clear to me, even if Phoebe seemed unsure about how I had uncovered her method of poisoning me. But at this point, it no longer mattered. With a sharp slap, she pushed my hand away and sank onto the chair, fixing me with a fierce, unyielding glare.

“Don’t… touch… me,” she spat out each word through clenched teeth, her voice strained as she fought to speak. I could see her throat tightening again—the same reaction that always emerged when her emotions spiraled beyond control.

Her breaths came faster and shallower, and I noticed the deep discomfort she felt in this vulnerable state, especially with me so near. My anger and frustration must have been obvious, etched across my face, and she read every ounce of it without hesitation.

“Tell me why you poisoned yourself,” I demanded, grabbing her shoulders firmly but trying to soften my tone. I knew gentleness wasn’t exactly my strong suit, but at that moment, I had to try. “Did you… really want to be with me?”

That’s what Phoebe had insisted when she said she stopped poisoning me—that she wanted to be with me. But was any of it genuine?

The thought that she had deliberately harmed herself while simultaneously hurting me twisted my mind. Did she… truly want me?

“Tell me, Phoebe. Do you actually want me?” I searched her eyes for any sign of truth, but she shook her head. Her lips pressed into a hard line, and pure hatred radiated from every pore of her being. “Please… tell me you want me…”

Phoebe parted her lips, struggling to force words out through the tightness in her throat. Despite the difficulty, she finally managed to speak.

“I… want you…” My expression softened, hope flickering briefly—until she finished the sentence. “…dead.”

She wanted me dead. That was the measure of her hatred.

“Go… die…” she whispered, each syllable a painful struggle, but her eyes conveyed far more than words ever could.

The torment she had endured was etched deep within her soul, a permanent scar.

She had faced abandonment before, yet she had believed her mate would be different.

She had hoped I would be different.

But once again, fate had proven her wrong.

I was just another person who refused to believe her. Another who had walked away. That was all I was…

“No, you don’t want me dead,” I said softly, cupping her face in my hands. “You wouldn’t hurt yourself if you truly wanted me gone.”

Phoebe’s hands shot up, grabbing mine and digging her nails into my skin.

Her claws tore into me, but I didn’t flinch—not even once.

I welcomed the pain willingly. I deserved it.
