Marked By The Mad King Alpha (Phoebe and Perry) novel Chapter 16

The room resembled a war zone. Shards of broken glass scattered like tiny stars across the floor, while splintered pieces of furniture leaned awkwardly against the walls. Amid the wreckage, only a single battered couch remained intact—my throne amidst the chaos. I had claimed it without hesitation. Standing before me was Kevin, the newly appointed alpha, his pride stripped away and his posture heavy with defeat.

He despised every moment of this confrontation.

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees, my electric-blue eyes locking onto his with unwavering intensity. “Well? What’s on your mind, Alpha?” I asked, my voice calm but edged with challenge.

Kevin faltered, searching for a confidence that clearly wasn’t there. “Rumor has it… you intend to claim one of our omegas,” he said, his gaze dropping beneath mine. “The pack’s been buzzing.”

I cut him off sharply. “She’s my mate.” The words were clipped, precise, edged with danger. The pack had seen me mark her—an impulsive move I was already questioning. “Is that a problem for you?”

He clung to my phrasing like a man drowning, desperate for a lifeline. “My king,” he began carefully, “forgive me, but she’s not… suitable for you. She was once connected to me. I rejected her after discovering her… questionable behavior. She doesn’t possess the qualities expected of a queen.”

My face remained unreadable. “You mean she’s not suitable for me.” A faint, almost imperceptible smile curved my lips. “Do explain.”

“She’s beneath your station,” he pressed, his voice tight. “It would shame the crown to—”

“Yet she wasn’t beneath yours,” I interrupted, my tone dropping to a cold edge. “Fascinating logic, Alpha.”

His body stiffened, the tension between us thick enough to cut through. The very air seemed charged with it.

“Are we friends, Alpha?” I asked, my voice laced with a teasing note.

Kevin blinked, caught off guard. “No, my king.”

“Then your opinion holds no weight.” I rose slowly from the couch, deliberately closing the distance until my height overshadowed his, a silent reminder of who ruled here. “I could crown a stablehand if I wished. Rank has never dictated my choices.”

Each word landed like a hammer blow. Kevin’s shoulders trembled under the weight of my authority.

“What’s the real issue?” I pressed gently, my voice dropping. “Can’t bear to let go of something you once claimed? You think she still belongs to you?”
