Marked By The Mad King Alpha (Phoebe and Perry) novel Chapter 166

Terror gripped my heart as the realization hit me like a cold wave: Perry was determined to take the lead in the war against the Valerium and Reginald. This was more than a mere battle for him; it was personal, and that made the stakes exponentially higher.

[This could very well be a trap.] I followed closely behind him, my hands trembling as I clutched my notes, shoving them into his line of sight, desperate for him to acknowledge my frantic scribbles.

Frustration bubbled within me, a boiling pot ready to overflow. I was so overwhelmed that I found myself trying to force words from my throat, anything to make him pause and consider my warnings.

“If it’s a trap, then let it be,” Perry replied with a dismissive shrug, his nonchalance sending chills racing down my spine. His tone was casual, almost as if he believed he was invincible. What could anyone do to him, even if it was indeed a trap?

He commanded an army and knew every inch of this land; it was his domain, after all.

But his indifference only intensified my panic.

In a moment of desperation, I kicked his leg hard enough to elicit a wince, hoping to convey just how serious this situation was. Perry couldn’t treat this like a minor skirmish; it was a full-blown war!

“Phoebe,” he uttered my name, his voice low and warning, but when our eyes locked, I could see the cracks forming in his stern demeanor. “I’ll be fine. I promise I’ll return as soon as I can.”

I shook my head vehemently, throwing my arms around him, holding on as if my life depended on it. I refused to let go.

We were in the war room, the very place I had rushed to the moment Marcela had informed me about the attack on the Sunstone Creek pack.

The news had spread like wildfire throughout the kingdom, igniting fear and anxiety among its people. They were acutely aware that their home was under siege; this was the Valerium’s retaliation, and the tension was palpable.

I lifted my gaze to meet his, pouring all my desperation and pleading into my eyes. “Please.”

Damn. I could see the struggle on his face, the internal battle as he fought against my plea. Yet, his resolve remained steadfast.

He had to leave; he had to end this—especially Reginald. That bastard had caused so much pain, and Perry was determined to make him pay for what he had done to his mate.

If I thought this was personal, then indeed, it was deeply personal. Would it lead him to act recklessly? Probably. But he was resolute; he would find a way to make it happen.

He was still berating himself for not taking that bastard’s life the first time he had set foot in the palace. If he had, then Helen would still be alive.

He was burdened by the weight of that decision. Helen had been one of his own, a member of his pack.

“I can’t, Phoebe. I’ll give you anything else you desire, but not this,” Perry said, pressing his lips against my forehead, a gesture that shattered my heart into a million pieces. All I wanted was for him to remain safe, yet he was refusing the one thing I had ever truly begged him for.

I buried my face against his chest, suppressing tears that threatened to spill over, feeling as if I might shatter into fragments.

“Come, I’ll show you the plan,” Perry urged, guiding me to the expansive table that displayed a detailed map of the kingdom. “Here’s Sunstone Creek pack,” he said, pointing to a spot marked with a red flag.
