Chapter 178 A Side You Don’t
Phoebe’s POV
Elder Augustus appeared momentarily taken aback by my inquiry. I could see the wheels turning in his mind as he struggled to articulate a coherent response. To assist him, I presented another note, hoping to convey my thoughts more clearly.
*If my presence won’t help, should I order you to go instead? You seem more likable than me.*
“My role is here, in the palace, so I…” Elder Augustus stammered, his words tumbling out in a jumbled mess that felt more like feeble excuses than valid reasons. “If you wish to send someone, you should…”
It was clear that Elder Tricia had anticipated this moment, as he swiftly interrupted Augustus.
“You don’t have a say in this, Augustus,” Tricia snapped, his voice laced with authority. “Your duty is to advise the king and queen, not to dictate her actions.”
Elder Augustus raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips as he retorted, “But it seems that’s exactly what you just did, Tricia.”
His gaze shifted back to me, and I could feel the weight of his words. “Your presence won’t help—it will only weaken the kingdom. I don’t mean to offend you, my queen, but that’s the truth.”
In that moment, Elder Augustus seemed to rediscover his confidence. Though his voice was not loud, the implication of his statement resonated throughout the room. A silent queen on the battlefield…
Frustration bubbled within me, and I quickly scribbled another note, thrusting it into his face with determination.
*Watch what you’re saying, Augustus. I’m the queen. I can order your head taken for that insult.*
Perhaps Perry’s darker traits were beginning to influence me, but at that moment, I was unbothered. It was crucial for these elders to understand their place; I needed to assert my authority before they attempted to control me further. I had endured enough attempts to dominate my will.
Meanwhile, Elder Tricia regarded me with a sense of pride. I was finally asserting myself, stepping out from the shadows of my previous shyness.
Though I recognized that I still had a long journey ahead, this was undeniably a step in the right direction.
Elder Augustus eventually bowed his head, acknowledging that he had crossed a line. His apology felt forced, lacking any sincerity, but I had come to expect nothing genuine from him.
With the matter settled, I prepared to leave the palace, flanked by my two personal warriors and several others, led by two senior warriors who would assist at the fortress.
Before I departed, I discreetly slipped a note into Elder Tricia’s hand: *Please help me from the palace. We both know the other elders will try different tricks to make me fail.*
A smirk crossed Elder Tricia’s face as he read my note. It was evident that the teachers had been right about me—I was indeed a quick learner.
“What are you smiling about?” Elder Augustus, noticing the exchange, squinted in curiosity, unable to decipher what I had written. He attempted to peek, but Elder Tricia blocked his view. “What did she say?”
“Don’t concern yourself with what she said. Focus on your own situation. You’re fortunate she’s not as merciless as the king, but tread carefully. You might encounter a side of her you would rather not see.”
