Marked By The Mad King Alpha (Phoebe and Perry) novel Chapter 20

I had imagined the room would be spacious, but nothing could have truly prepared me for what I saw. Above me, a chandelier sparkled, casting a gentle, shimmering light that spilled into every corner of the vast chamber. The entire space felt like a quiet proclamation of power and immense wealth. Even the bed was immense—far larger than the one I had used back at the beta house, and in fact, bigger than the alpha’s own.

This wasn’t just a bedroom; it was an entire world contained within four walls. The first area unfolded like a royal suite, complete with plush velvet sofas, a sleek television, and modern conveniences that blended effortlessly with an old-world elegance. Tradition met comfort here, every detail polished until it gleamed. To my right stood a grand desk, positioned before a towering wall of bookshelves that stretched from floor to ceiling. The faint aroma of leather-bound volumes and aged parchment hung in the air, subtle but unmistakable. Beyond that was the sleeping area, and attached to it, a bathroom with a marble tub so large it could easily accommodate a small gathering.

The sheer scale and beauty of it all left me breathless. It was overwhelmingly lavish—too much for someone like me to fully grasp or feel comfortable in. Flynn’s warning echoed loudly in my mind: Don’t cause trouble.

I gripped my backpack tighter, almost afraid that even the sound of my footsteps might disturb the solemnity of the room. When I finally reached the walk-in closet, I couldn’t help but chuckle softly at the sight. It was enormous—bigger than my entire old room back in the omega quarters—and completely empty.

I set my few belongings down on one of the shelves, but they looked utterly out of place—mere scraps in a sea of gold and grandeur. Feeling a flush of embarrassment, I quickly packed everything back into my bag and shoved it into the farthest corner. At least if the king decided to throw me out, I could disappear without a trace.

Curious, I wandered into the bathroom next. The walls were adorned with intricate carvings—wolves in mid-howl, crescent moons, and scenes of battles long past, all etched with remarkable detail. Growing up as a beta’s daughter, I had lived comfortably enough, but this place was something else entirely—it belonged to another world.

It took me several minutes to figure out the complicated controls, but when warm water finally poured over me, I couldn’t help but let out a long, relieved sigh. Life in the omega quarters meant cold showers, even in the dead of winter. Now, hot water cascaded down my skin, washing away days of grime, fatigue, and worry.

The soaps and shampoo smelled faintly of vanilla and cedarwood, a comforting scent that made me close my eyes and, for just a moment, allow myself to pretend this was truly mine. When I finally stepped out, steam curling around me like a soft mist, I found a tray of food waiting by the bedside: roasted meat, fresh fruit, and soft bread still warm from the oven.

For the first time in months, a genuine smile spread across my face. A real, unforced smile.

That night, I slipped into sleep on crisp, clean sheets, my stomach full and the air around me wrapped in warmth. It was the most peaceful rest I had enjoyed in years. Only one strange thing disturbed the calm—a fleeting dream in which I felt someone watching me. But when I woke, the memory dissolved like morning fog.

Old habits die hard. Years of servitude had trained me to rise before dawn, and so when I opened my eyes, the clock confirmed it was still two hours before sunrise.
