Dani recoiled sharply as Kevin brusquely shoved her aside. He adjusted his attire with an air of indifference, deliberately ignoring her as she curled up near the table, her body trembling with a mix of fear and confusion. The atmosphere in the room felt thick, heavy with unspoken tension and the faint echo of a knock that reverberated through the silence.
“Come in,” Kevin commanded, his voice steady.
Cameron entered, his shoulders squared and posture rigid, yet his eyes betrayed a hollow emptiness. The scent of dominance mingled with an undercurrent of shame hung in the air, creating a palpable tension. He chose not to address the scene he had just stumbled into.
“Why do you keep spreading lies about her?” Cameron’s voice was rough, a reflection of sleepless nights and pent-up frustration. There was a sharp edge of disgust in his tone as he spoke. “She isn’t even here to defend herself.”
A faint, almost imperceptible smile crept across Kevin’s face, embodying a calm cruelty that sent a chill down Dani’s spine. “Because the lies serve a purpose,” he replied coolly. “And you, of all people, should understand why they are necessary.”
Cameron’s brow furrowed deeply, confusion and anger battling for dominance on his face. “You’ve already tarnished her reputation once. Do you intend to finish what you started?”
Kevin poured himself a drink, the liquid swirling in the glass as he took his time. “You want your daughter back, don’t you? We can’t confront the king directly. He would obliterate us before dawn breaks. But if we can ruin her standing in his eyes, he’ll send her back—broken, discredited, and utterly alone.”
“Why?” Cameron’s voice dropped to a whisper, laced with disbelief. “You cast her aside. You tormented her. What makes you want her near you again?”
Kevin’s smile twisted into something thin and bitter, a reflection of his inner turmoil. “Because the bond doesn’t simply disappear. I can still feel it, gnawing at me. And perhaps I can’t stand the thought of her being his now.”
“You truly believe the Mad King will just relinquish her?” Cameron challenged, his voice rising. “He has marked her as his own.”
“If she held any real significance to him, he would have proclaimed her as his queen,” Kevin retorted sharply, his tone cutting through the air. “He hasn’t. That tells me he’s already regretting his choice.” He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Do you think he treats her better than we ever did? That man feeds traitors to wolves. What fate do you think awaits a woman he no longer desires?”
Cameron froze, Kevin’s words striking precisely at the wound he had tried so hard to conceal.
“You’re her father,” Kevin continued, his tone softening slightly. “Go to her. Ensure she’s still alive. I can’t take that risk, but you can. Discover the truth for yourself.”
In that moment, Cameron’s silence became a binding agreement, sealing the trap that had been laid before him.
