Deanna’s POV:

The phone started ringing.

I had just lifted my forehead from the steering wheel.

I stared at the screen but didn’t move. The ringtone echoed stubbornly inside the car.

After a long pause, I finally took a deep breath and pressed answer.

“Deanna.”

Luis’s deep, magnetic voice came through the line, mixed with a faint electric buzz. It sent a tingling shiver down my ears.

Hearing him, a wave of emotion spread through me until even my fingers felt weak.

I cleared my throat, trying to sound calm. “When are you coming back?”

“Miss me already?”

I stayed quiet for a few seconds, then said, “There’s something I need to talk to you

“Not over the phone. We’ll talk when you’re back.”

The call ended. I leaned back in my seat, feeling like the air had been sucked out of me.

That evening, Violet dragged me out for dinner.

She seemed in a good mood and even ordered a beer.

I, on the other hand, was drowning in my thoughts, unable to enjoy anything.

I poked the steak on my plate for ages without taking a bite.

Violet set her glass down and tapped the table with her knuckles.

“Come on, girl. Luis is on a business trip, not sneaking around with someone else. Why are you spacing out over dinner with me?”

Her words made me quickly fork a piece of beef into my mouth. The meat was juicy and tender, bursting with flavor.

“Nothing,” I said quietly. “I’m happy to see you enjoy yourself.”

Violet narrowed her eyes and studied me for a long time. “Something’s off with you.”

I was shocked. Am I that easy to read?

She leaned closer. “This isn’t because of what I said before, is it? You know, about being careful with Mr. Eaton?”

I pressed my lips together and said nothing.

Violet slapped the table. “Look, I used to think all men were the same–selfish, only good for a drink and a laugh. But Luis? I don’t know him well. When you were in trouble with your pack, he stepped in right away. I also benefited from his help and managed to break free from my mess. He’s nothing like that jerk Jake.”

If Violet knew I was planning to break things off, she’d never let it go without grilling me.

I sighed and changed the subject.

“Don’t worry about me. Tell me–do you have any new admirers lately?”

As soon as I asked, Violet slammed the table so hard that the dishes rattled.

“That scumbag Robert keeps sending flowers and fancy snacks to my set every day. If he wants to chase me, fine. But the way he looks at me, it’s like I should be grateful he even noticed me.”

Robert was the youngest son of an elder from the Olsendreich Pack. Spoiled since birth, he was reckless and arrogant. That guy was changing girlfriends faster than he changed clothes.

Violet wasn’t exactly known for staying with one guy either.

But I still didn’t want her to get involved with that scumbag.

“Robert isn’t reliable,” I warned her. “If you’re serious about someone, Terence might be better.”

Violet snorted.

“Really? You think my standards are that low? Just circling around your ex’s buddies?” She rolled her eyes.

“Besides, if I dated anyone from the Olsendreich Pack, wouldn’t that mean you’d run into Jake all the time? You’d probably have a heart attack.”

The moment the words left her mouth, she froze, her eyes going wide.

“Crap! Speak of the devil!”

I turned, and my heart twisted.

Standing at the restaurant entrance were Robert, Terence, and Jake.

All tall, broad–shouldered, and impossible to miss. Especially Jake. His alpha presence filled the room, impossible to ignore.

Robert strutted over like he owned the place.

“Mind if we join?”

I lifted my head and accidentally locked eyes with Jake. My breath caught.

In the next second, I quickly looked away, pretending I hadn’t noticed.
