Deanna’s POV:
After Luis shouted into the city, his eyes crinkled into a teasing smile. “Not bad at all.”
That smile stole my words.
Wait… what? How did I suddenly turn into some little menace?

I was just about to snap back when the night sky suddenly lit up with brilliant meteors streaking across the darkness, each leaving a dazzling trail behind.
I tilted my head up, eyes sparkling with wonder.
“Meteors! Luis, look! It’s a meteor shower!” Overcome with excitement, I grabbed his arm and shook it hard. “They’re so beautiful! Come on, let’s make a wish!”
I released his solid arm, clasped my hands under my chin, and closed my eyes in a small, reverent prayer to Nyra.
When I finished making my wish, I finally noticed his gaze on me—hot, intent, almost burning.
I slowly turned to him, froze for a second, then gave a sheepish laugh.
“Heh… It’s just… I’ve never seen a meteor shower before, so I kinda copied what everyone else does and made a wish.”
Luis‘ lips curved lazily. “If wishes really came true, Nyra would’ve dropped dead from overworking.”
His words popped my little bubble of joy, leaving me feeling foolish for what I’d done.
My shoulders slumped as I muttered in disappointment, “Yeah… guess you’re right.”
“Since Nyra’s too busy, I’ll grant you a wish instead, Deanna,” Luis said,
I blinked at him. “Why?”
“Because I’m in a good mood today.” He paused, a teasing edge in his tone. “But if you don’t want it, forget it.”

Chapter 16 Do You Really Mean It?
“I do! I really do!”
I blurted it out, afraid he’d change his mind in the next second.
Luis arched his brow. “So, what do you want?”

I hesitated, screwed up my courage, squeezed my eyes shut, and blurted it out in one breath.
“You said you want me to be yours. Do you really mean it?”
The air fell into a heavy silence.
I slowly opened my eyes and, without warning, met his golden eyes.
Luis‘ lips curved in a merciless reply. “No.”
“Huh?”
I’d braced myself for that answer, but hearing it still stung.
Maybe it was the wine. Maybe it was Philip’s voice echoing in my head—find someone better than Jake.
But I had let myself forget the reality of the Mooncrown Pack. They were the most ancient, most powerful pureborn family in the werewolf world.
And Luis, their Alpha, carried a lineage as pure as it came. His voice was law in our world.
Me? I was just the daughter of Mistbane Pack, a nobody my own Alpha barely cared for. How could I ever dream of bonding with him?
Embarrassment flickered across my face.
“Forget I said anything.”
Luis‘ voice came again. “If you want to be my woman, I expect you to be unclaimed.”
“I’ve never been claimed by any man. You know that.”
The words tumbled out before I could stop them, and the moment I heard myself, heat rushed to my face. I wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear.
Luis‘ mouth quirked in amusement as he pulled me into his arms. His lips brushed my ear, his voice a low murmur. “I know your body’s unclaimed. But your heart… I want that unclaimed,
too.”

“Deanna, if you really want to be mine, say it again when you’re sober.”
His words mingled with the night breeze, curling into my car.
In that instant, my heart skipped a beat.

Jake’s POV:
“Jake, you’re drinking too hard.”
I ignored Robert and kept pouring the liquor down my throat.
All I could hear in my head was Deanna’s voice saying, “We’re even now,” and that breakup text in my phone.
Comforting people had never been my thing. Truth be told, I’d never so much as tried.
It was always Deanna texting first, begging me to make up. She would send dozens of messages, and I would reply if I remembered after work; if not, I just let them sit there.
But this time, her coldness threw me off.
I had actually been planning to give in tonight.
Instead, she pulled that stunt–making Peggie jump into the pool.
She had gone too far!
It was just a fake ceremony.
Fake kidnappings, silent treatments, forcing someone into the water… She used to be nothing like this. She used to be soft, gentle, always so understanding.
I couldn’t help missing that soft, obedient Deanna.
The thought made frustration spike in my chest.
“It was just a fake ceremony, and she still makes a big deal out of nothing. I even offered her a bigger mating ceremony, and she still won’t take it. What the hell does she want?”
Terence pressed a hand over mine before I could pour another drink.
“Jake, we all heard what happened tonight. Sure, Deanna might’ve gone overboard, but you

never should’ve agreed to that ceremony with Peggie. And tonight, in front of everyone, you carried Peggie out again.
“Of course Deanna felt humiliated. Why don’t you text her first and try to make it up to her?”
I leaned back on the couch, tilting my head, my face cold and unreadable.
Fine. If she showed up at Spade A tonight to apologize and beg me to make up, I’d let it slide.
I picked up my phone and opened my chat with Deanna.
Right under that glaring “We’re done” message, I typed out a reply and hit send.
The screen flashed back-‘Message rejected.‘
