**Chapter 166: Bite Me**
**Deanna’s POV:**
In the dimly lit confines of the bedroom, I found myself ensconced in layers of soft sheets, my eyelids pressed tightly shut as if that would somehow shield me from the restless thoughts swirling in my mind. The lazy haze that had previously enveloped me had receded, much like a tide drawing back from the shore, leaving behind a sense of disquiet that prickled against my skin, awakening every nerve.
Just then, the door creaked open, the sound slicing through the stillness like a whisper of the wind.
I could hear the soft, deliberate footsteps approaching, each one echoing in the silence, causing my heart to race wildly in my chest—like a bird desperate to escape its cage. Anxiety fluttered within me, yet I kept my eyes shut tight, willing myself to remain still and unresponsive.
Hadn’t Luis left already?
After a brief moment of silence, his voice broke through, lazy yet teasing, “I know you’re not asleep. Eat this.”
Curiosity tugged at me, pulling me from my cocoon of sheets. I cracked open my eyes, blinking against the dim light that filled the room.
My gaze landed on the small painkiller he held, the tablet glinting in the soft glow of the bedside lamp, a tiny promise of relief.
Luis stood there, his hand casually tucked into his pocket, a hint of mischief playing at the corners of his lips. “Do I need to feed you?” he asked, his tone light, yet there was an earnestness beneath it that caught me off guard.
With a reluctant sigh, I propped myself up, extending my hand to accept the pill. I swallowed it quickly, the bitterness lingering on my tongue like an unwelcome guest, and set the cup back on the nightstand with a soft clink that echoed in the quiet room.
“Thanks,” I murmured, my voice barely rising above a whisper, laden with unspoken emotions.
Luis’s gaze remained fixed on me, unwavering and intense, as if he were trying to read the very depths of my soul. He chuckled softly, the sound warm and inviting, wrapping around me like a comforting blanket.
“Why does your thanks sound like you’re trying to kick me out?” he teased, his voice playful, yet I could sense an undercurrent of sincerity.
That was precisely what I had in mind.
What had triggered this sudden kindness from him? I couldn’t shake the memory of that night—the way he had turned cold and distant, leaving me feeling raw and exposed, the sting of his rejection still fresh in my mind.
The pain of that moment had been like a slap, igniting a fire of humiliation within me, a stark reminder of my vulnerability.
But clearly, the man before me had no inkling of the turmoil he had caused.
Then again, an Alpha of his stature was bound to carry an air of arrogance.
As if sensing the storm brewing within me, Luis settled onto the edge of the bed, his deep-set eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my heart race.
He placed his warm palm gently on my stomach, his voice low and soothing as he asked, “Does it still hurt?”
His hand was large and comforting, and for a fleeting moment, I found myself lost in the warmth radiating from him.
