Jake’s POV:

That slap snapped me awake.

For the first time, I saw disgust and coldness in Deanna’s clear eyes.

Fear rushed over me.

Deanna hated me?

No. She loved me. She couldn’t possibly hate me.

Thad probably imagined that.

However, her recent behavior and tonight’s rejection made me question everything.

It all told me that the breakup she swore by Nyra’s name was real.

A strange ache spread through my chest, heavy and sinking, like something was slowly dragging me down.

“Forgive?” She repeated the word like it was the funniest joke she had ever heard.

“The last chance was the day Peggie jumped in the pool. You left me for her. That was it. Jake, loyalty is written in a werewolf’s blood. You couldn’t even keep the simplest promise of loyalty.”

“I told you, she was my responsibility, nothing more,” I blurted, raising my voice.

“Responsibility?” Deanna gave me a contemptuous look. “That’s some heavy responsibility you’ve got there.”

Right then, my phone rang, cutting through the tension.

I glanced at the screen and hit decline.

But the phone rang again.

Deanna looked at me and gave a mocking smile.

“Answer it. Maybe Peggie’s heart stopped beating, and she couldn’t breathe again. If you don’t go, you’ll accuse me of holding you back, of hurting your first love. I’m not taking that fall.”

Her tone was light, but the sarcasm cut deep.

Because she was right–1 had blamed her for this before.

The ringing kept going, sharp and unrelenting, echoing through the quiet hallway.

My grip tightened on the phone until my knuckles turned white. Veins bulged along my arm.

After the ringtone played several times, I finally picked up.

Peggie’s soft, tearful voice came through the line.

“Jake, I don’t feel well tonight. Can you come see me?”

I looked at Deanna. Her face was calm, like she had expected this all along.

Grinding my teeth, I answered, “Peggie, if you’re not feeling well, call Jorge. I’m busy.”

Her voice broke. “Jake, my chest hurts. I can’t breathe. I don’t want Jorge; I want you.”

Her words faded. Following that, I heard Jorge shouting in panic. “Peggie! Peggie, what’s wrong? Jake, she passed out! Her breathing’s weak–get over here now!”

My jaw locked so hard it hurt. My mind spun into chaos.

No matter what Deanna thought, I couldn’t ignore this.

Peggie’s bloodline is fragile. If something happened, I’d never be able to face her parents.

Deanna’s POV:

I watched Jake walk away without even looking back.

Strangely, I didn’t feel the emotional turmoil I expected. No rage. No heartbreak. Just numbness. It was like being burned so badly by wolfsbane, you stop feeling pain at all.

It made sense.

My heart had been cut open too many times. If I still hurt over him, I’d already be dead inside.

I picked up my keys from the floor, unlocked the door, and went inside. In the bathroom, I filled the tub until the water was high.
