Luis arched a brow. “So, the moment this dumblog shows up, my ranking in the house just tanks?”
He cut Puddy a dark look. “Behave.”
Then, he turned and headed back to the kitchen to finish dinner.
I rubbed Puddy’s head. “Ignore your dad. He’s being a jerk.”
Puddy barked three times in total agreement.
Even so, after that scolding, he became very good. He just pressed his head into my palm and rubbed against it, no more sneaking licks or trying to climb into my lap.
That soft warmth against my hand made my eyes prickle.
“Puddy… thank you for remembering me.”
After dinner, Luis said he smelled like the kitchen and went to shower.
I curled up on the sofa with Puddy–one woman, one dog–watching a movie.
A minute later, his voice drifted from the stairs. What are you up to?”
I looked up–and smacked face–first into a very distracting view.
Luis came down bare–chested in gray lounge pants, toweling his short hair. Droplets slid over the clean lines of his chest and vanished into his waistband.
My pulse spiked. I swallowed and whipped my gaze back to the screen, aiming for blasé. “Movie.”
Luis stepped over to us and glanced at Puddy.
He pointed at the cushion to the side.
Puddy’s cars drooped. He lifted one leg, set it down, scooted his butt over inch by reluctant inch to the indicated spot.
Satisfied, Luis sat in the space he’d carved out.
I had to bite back a laugh. Petty, party of one.

He’d even refused Puddy a taste of dinner, insisting on kibble.
In the end, I couldn’t stand it and split my plate with the dog.
I smoothed Puddy’s fur. “Best boy. Sit by your dad and watch with us.”
He lit up at my voice. He gave two soft barks while swishing his tail.

I snagged the towel from Luis’s hand and draped it over his head, rubbing through the damp mess of his hair.
His voice dropped, warm and velvety. “So thoughtful?”
I paused–pretty sure this was the first time I’d ever dried his hair.
“Consider it payment for cooking tonight.”
I finished and started to lower the towel–when he caught my wrist and gave the gentlest tug.
My balance tipped; I landed across his solid thighs, and my nose bumped his chest, all cedar and heat.
Luis tipped my chin up, looking lazy as sin. “That’s it?”
His face kept closing the distance. My heartbeat kicked, breath going thin, and Puddy chose that exact moment to bark.
I blinked back to myself, ears burning, and tried to slide off his lap.
Luis’s arm locked at my waist. Nope.
“Watch the movie here.”
We made it all the way to the end credits.
Luis frowned at the TV. “What is this? The heroine’s wailing is giving me a headache.”
“It’s a childhood–sweethearts thing. He confesses after graduation, she turns him down, and he goes overseas. They meet again, can’t help themselves, get back together–then break up anyway.”
A noncommittal “Mm.”
I added, “It’s Violet’s new romance film. She asked me to watch it.”
