The Mooncrown servants led me down a long corridor and out into the sprawling back garden.

Luis was in off–duty clothes, crouched on the lawn with a rubber ball, running drills with the fluffball, Puddy.

Each time he lifted his hand and flung the ball, i arced so far that I lost track of where it landed.

A beat later, Puddy would come tearing back with his jaws clamped around the prize, his tail going like a metronome.

When Luis noticed me, he rose in that lazy way of his, walked over, and dropped into a wicker chair beneath a trellis.

The next time Puddy galloped back with the ball, I knelt, popped open my kit, and slipped on my stethoscope.

The hound spat the rubber onto the grass, flopped down, and let me manhandle him like a perfect patient.

Once I finished the quick workup, he immediately scuttled to Luis’s leg and parked himself like a sentry.

I packed my gear and said, “He’s in good shape. Gut’s a little touchy due to age creeping in. Ease up on the high–intensity stuff.”

“Woof! Woof–woof!”

Apparently, he understood me–and didn’t like the medical opinion.

“Tsk.” I clicked my tongue. “Explain this to me: after all these years as Puddy’s doctor, why does he still treat me like the enemy?”

I was, for the record, the dean of a hospital… who had been moonlighted as a dog doc for almost a decade.

Some patients just didn’t appreciate greatness.

Luis’s lips curved. “Maybe it’s your unlikable face”

Luis slouched deeper, one ankle over a knee, idly rubbing Puddy’s head with his toes.

“You hear that? You’re old. Show some restraint. Stop shoving a ball at me every five minutes.”

Puddy lifted his proud head and deliberately looked away.

I couldn’t help it–I laughed.

“Not gonna lie, he’s a lot like you. Same brand of pride.”

Servants appeared with a fruit tray and coffee, arranging everything on the table.

I popped a grape. “So, you hauled me here just to give Puddy a checkup?”

Luis took a slow sip, unhurried as ever. “My curse is gone. I’m going to propose to Deanna.”

“Deanna,” he said, and his gaze softened in a way I’ve never seen on him. “She’s the Healer.”
