Chapter 41 Fine, It’s All My Fault

Deanna’s POV:

Jake’s words made my face burn red.

Yes, it was true.

Back then, I was the one who clung to him.

I was the one who begged him to be with me.

I never thought the love that once burned so bright would one day become a weapon he used to hurt me.

My mind slipped back to when I was seventeen. My parents hadn’t brought me back to the Mistbane Pack.

The day I got my acceptance letter from the best university in the whole land. I ran home, excited to share the news. Dorothy barely looked at it before tearing it to shreds right in front of me.

“College is useless for a girl,” she sneered. “Better to get married early.”

Then she tossed a factory job offer letter in my lap. “I already took a 30,000–dollar referral fee. Next month you’ll be working the assembly line. Stop dreaming.”

When I refused, she slapped me hard across the face, her eyes filled with disgust.

“Deanna, if you’ve got any guts, then get out and don’t come back. You’ve got no ID, no papers, nothing. You’re a nobody. You’ll never climb out of the gutter. Give it up.”

I ran out of the house in tears, my head spinning, until–bam!-I crashed into a black luxury car.

The door opened, and out stepped Jake.

Back then, he wasn’t as cold and distant as he is now.

He still had that serious look, short brown hair, and sharp eyes. But beneath it, he is still carrying a trace of boyish youth.

I was trembling and crying so hard that he looked worried. “What’s wrong? Are you injured?”

I had banged up my leg, and blood seeped through my jeans. But the physical pain was nothing compared to the shattering of my future.

I shook my head, choking on my words over and over. “My college is gone.”

He stayed quiet for a moment, then said, “I’ll get it back for you.”

I didn’t know then that he was an Alpha. I thought he was trying to comfort me. But the next day, I actually received a new acceptance letter, hand–delivered by the university director himself.

In that instant, Jake was like a beam of light cutting straight through the darkness of my life. At seventeen, he became my only

salvation.

A year later, when I was already in university, I ran into him again at one of my part–time jobs.

But it didn’t matter. Feelings can’t be forced away. I still loved him. And I still gathered the courage to try and get close to him.

I had never chased anyone before. It wasn’t really clinging or begging it was just me holding out my burning heart, carefully offering it to the boy who had once saved me.

Until one day, Jake pulled up in front of me in his Rolls–Royce.

The back window slid down, showing his cold, calm face.

“You wait for me here every day? Why?”

My cheeks flushed, and I lowered my head shyly. “I don’t mean anything by it. I just wanted to see you.”

“You like me?”

Biting my lip, I whispered, “Yes.”

He stared at me for a long time. Then suddenly he asked, “And how long will you like me?”

I lifted my eyes, meeting his deep gaze. “Forever.”

Now, pulling myself out of the past, I looked at the werewolf standing in front of me–the werewolf who felt both familiar and strange.

“People grow up, Jake. I’ve given you my heart for the past five years. I’ve given everything to this relationship.”

“What about you? You thought I’d always be waiting for you because of that promise I made. And that’s why you’ve been so careless. My love is so cheap in your eyes, and you get to hurt me as much as you like.”

My voice trembled as I spoke.

Not just for him, but for all the years I’d given away, all the love and pain that now felt wasted.

Jake’s POV:

Watching Deanna so upset stirred up a wave of frustration I couldn’t explain.

really didn’t get what she was so worked up about. I already promised her she’d be my Luna. What else could she possibly want?
