Chapter 75 Why Should I Believe Her?
Jake’s POV:
I leaned back against the hospital bed, flipping through the book given by Terence.
The book was full of strange advice that went against everything I believed in as an Alpha.
Things like acting pitiful to beg for forgiveness, crying until you’re out of breath, or hurting yourself to prove your love.
The stuff inside made my mouth twitch.
I couldn’t stand it anymore and tossed the book onto the bed.
Seriously? Who writes this garbage?
No way. An Alpha would never lower himself like that for an Omega.
Just picturing myself doing it made me sick to my stomach.
Right then, my phone buzzed with a new message. It was from Peggie.
I unlocked the screen and opened it.
A photo filled the screen–Deanna holding hands with another werewolf.
The picture was shaky and blurry. You couldn’t see the werewolf’s face, only his tall figure from the side. Deanna’s head was down, hiding her expression.
But I knew right away–it was her.
Under the photo was Peggie’s message.
“Jake, Deanna is cheating on you!”
My pupils shrank, locking on that hand around hers.
Rage burned through me. I wanted to rip them apart right then and there.
Impressive! Deanna!
All this time, you kept saying you wanted to break up. Turns out, you already had someone else lined up.
And you even had the nerve to push all the blame on me.
In that moment, my chest was burning with rage.
I couldn’t tell if it was anger, heartbreak, or fear.
All I knew was that the mix of emotions inside me tore through like a wild beast breaking free.

After Peggie was carried out by security, the restaurant returned to normal.
The manager kept everything under control. Soon, the soft notes of a cello floated through the air again.
Luis didn’t sit across from me with proper business etiquette. Instead, he sat right beside me, his arm casually resting across the back of my chair.
The waiter served one plate after another, each dish beautiful and expensive.
I picked up my fork and knife, but I could feel his eyes on me the whole time. There was an obvious trace of amusement in them.
My ears grew hot under his stare. I finally set the utensils down and asked, “Why didn’t you believe Peggie just now?”
It was the first time I’d ever had a boyfriend who openly took my side.
The feeling was strange and a little overwhelming.
Luis raised his brow, his voice playful. “Why would I believe her? She’s just a lowly half–blood. Even her scent reeks of lies.”
For a moment, I was speechless.
He was right. Why should he believe Peggie?
Maybe I was just too used to the past. Every time something happened, Jake always believed Peggie first.
So I thought Luis would do the same.
Luis hooked his finger around mine, slowly brushing his thumb across my palm.
After a long pause, Luis spoke with a lazy calm, “Deanna, I protect my own. My woman–only I get to mess with her.”
The word “protect” sent a shiver through me.
I understood what he meant. I was his girlfriend, and he would stand by me.
So there really are people who don’t care about right or wrong first but simply choose your side.
In the past, I always swallowed my pride before my packs. With Jake’s favoritism, I forced myself to act generous. I turned myself into a hedgehog, hiding behind sharp quills.
But Luis’s words made those quills soften, just a little.
I bit my lip, and a smile slipped out. “Thank you.”
This time, the words came from my heart.
I was grateful he didn’t treat me like everyone else–quick to call me too petty. Instead, he stood by me, no questions asked. For the first time, I knew how steady it felt to have someone defend me.
Luis held my fingers, his eyes carrying a quiet hope. “Since you’re thanking me… Is there something you haven’t told me?”
Soft cello music drifted in the background, filling the restaurant with the perfect mood.
Looking into his honest eyes, I hesitated, then spoke.
