"I think you should nurse him now, so that he will stay content with me once we arrive at our destination. When his stomach is full, he doesn’t cry," Evenly advised as they drew into the crowded city.
Belle looked down at her son, who was standing on her lap and had been hugging her neck the whole time since she took him into her arms. It was only when she placed her hand around his chubby little waist to move him back that she noticed a change in the baby.
Angel had grown a little more than he had been the night before when she last held him in her arms. Belle realized this in wonder as she drew him away from her neck to see his face more clearly, and she noticed that even his features had changed slightly, the round chubbiness of his cheeks had lessened.
Her discussions with Evenly had distracted her from quickly noticing the change. Or... had the change only just happened now inside the carriage? The thought made her stare at her son in bewilderment.
He had grown unusually fast during the first weeks after his birth, and for several weeks since they had left the mountains, his abnormal growth had stopped. She had believed, just as Rohan had said, that his growth would slow at some point, but now it seemed to have continued again, and this time it had happened while she was holding him, while he stood contentedly on her lap, hugging her tightly.
To confirm if it had just happened, she asked Evenly if she noticed something different about Angel. The other woman turned to look at the baby, who was staring back at her with a bright, smiley face that revealed two tiny teeth. Evenly gasped, almost startled.
"Oh! I didn’t notice he’s already sprouting teeth," Evenly murmured in astonishment. "And not just the teeth, something else looks different on his face. Is that normal?" she asked, for until now she had never known a creature who could grow as fast as Angel.
Belle nodded quickly to reassure her, so the vampiress wouldn’t begin to fear the baby the way her parents had. Angel was special, and no matter how different he was from her, Belle loved him with all her heart.
"Oh..." Evenly mused softly, smiling back at the baby. "One would think he’s a year old instead of only a few months."
Belle chuckled, though her eyes moistened as her son turned to her. Despite how quickly he was growing, he still sought her milk. She whispered with a watery smile into his ear, "Can you just grow slowly, Angel? Very soon you will start to walk, and I haven’t held you enough yet." She kissed his cheeks, then his nose, and finally his forehead, not wanting to miss a single moment of his changes and growth.
While they were headed to a high-society town in Aragonia to shop and look around, Rohan had already arrived at the town where the old Dawson mansion was, by following the location the duke had given him.
He didn’t have any trouble finding the town or the house, because the moment he entered the town known as Brackenford, he realized it was like a ghost town, with many houses abandoned and ruined by time.
He walked around the quiet place, barely coming across anyone. The last person he had seen, at the junction of Brackenford, and asked for directions, had tried to warn him.
’’Sire, you don’t want to step into Brackenford. It’s a cursed town in Aragonia. There are many bad rumors about the place,’’ the elderly man, who was picking up scraps from the dirt, had said while scratching his unkempt hair and looking up at Rohan, squinting against the sun.
Rohan arched a curious brow as he asked, "Tell me more. Have you been into this town and seen for yourself?"
"God forbid I go there. Though I am very poor and pick up scrap to sell, I will never go there, sire. My friend, Sam, went crazy when he broke into one of the abandoned houses to take things to sell. He was never sane again. I heard there are words that the town will soon be brought down."
Rohan took in the man’s words with a nod of his head before he dug into his coat for a few gold coins and threw them at the man. "Get yourself clean. You smell like shit and look like filth." Saying that, he walked away, heading straight into the town.
The Dawson’s old house stood out from all the abandoned houses, blackened on one side and ruined by time and neglect on the other.
Trees had grown along the roads and side streets, with many birds and animals moving within the thick bushes that led up to the gate of the house.
The gates were covered with creepers curled tightly around the rusted iron, with large spiders hidden in thick webs. Rohan did not bother to touch the gate knowing it wouldn’t open from all the rust and creeper. Instead, he opened his wings and went over it, for there was no one in sight to see him.
Long grass had overrun the entire grounds, mingling with wild weeds that dampened his clean boots as he walked up to the house. The only sounds came from crickets and frogs croaking around the abandoned fountain in the center, whose waters had turned green.
Rohan entered the house through a large broken window. It seemed the Dawsons had left the place without taking anything, the furniture and belongings were all still there, though now draped in white sheets, dirtied with dust and neglect since no one had been around to clean them.
He walked through the rooms, lifting sheets and opening random doors. When he reached the part with blackened, burnt walls, he knew he had come close to Isabelle’s room, where it was said she had burned herself.
At last, he reached a door barely hanging from its frame, charred and half-eaten by flames. Rohan pushed it open and stepped inside. He took in the room, noticing how everything in it was burned black and still carried the faint smell of smoke and dust despite the time that had passed.
This was where Isabelle had died. All of her things that hadn’t been consumed by fire were left in this room, as though buried with her memory and forgotten. They were covered in white sheets and shoved against the far wall. Rohan walked forward and lifted the sheets with a swift movement. Dust rose in thick clouds, and he waved them away from his face to see what lay beneath.
