Married To The Mad Vampire Lord novel Chapter 454

Chapter 454: "Who are you?"

Rohan’s eyes darkened as they settled on the Witcher who had almost caused his wife a deadly injury, as she would have fallen on her stomach. He had been standing outside when he sensed a black witch inside the house. He had not thought Belle would be in harm’s way, because she could go invisible to her victims, until Kuhn appeared and told him she wasn’t invisible to these ones.

The Witcher didn’t expect another person to suddenly appear and stop him from turning the reaper to dust to escape death, but he recovered quickly enough to mutter another spell to attack them both without caring who the man was. Before the spell could leave his mouth, a hand was choking his throat.

"Not so fast, Witcher," Rohan gritted out as he tightened his hold around the man’s throat, causing his daughter, who was lost inside her spell, to come awake. Her eyes turned slit-like, like a cat’s, as she looked at Rohan and Belle.

Seeing her father choking in the hand’s of the man, she got up with a loud shriek to attack him, but something sharp struck her chest as she moved. Blood immediately oozed out as she froze, surprise on her face, a dagger stuck inside her chest. She fell to the ground with a thud and began to bleed to death.

Rohan clicked his tongue as he looked away from the young, dying witch he had struck with his dagger without even releasing her father to do it.

The Witcher’s eyes widened as he began to struggle upon seeing his daughter bleeding to death.

"No..." he choked out, trying to pry Rohan’s fingers from his throat. "My daughter..."

Rohan turned away from the man to look at his wife, who was walking wobbly to reach her scythe. She grabbed it and used it to stand straight, blood trailing down the side of her neck. Rage coiled inside Rohan at the fact that the Witcher had hurt her. Without looking away from her, his other hand went straight into the man’s chest, ripping out his heart before dropping his body.

Belle didn’t need to be told. She opened the passage portal and sent the two souls away without letting them linger for a second. Then she went down as dizziness washed over her again, sitting on the floor, trying to stop her turning eyes.

Rohan put the heart aside on a table and then moved with speed to Belle’s side, using his handkerchief to press the bleeding wound on the back of her head, causing her to grimace.

"I think it’s best if I come into the houses with you from now on," Rohan said firmly as he removed her cap to see how big the wound was. It wasn’t large, but her scalp was split and bleeding a lot.

"It was done on purpose," Belle said, raising her eyes to Rohan as he pressed his handkerchief on the wound. "They knew I wouldn’t be able to take black witches’ souls. But thanks to you, I passed another obstacle."

If Rohan wasn’t here, she couldn’t imagine what would have happened if the girl had finished casting her spell to turn her to dust or if the father had killed her before she could take their soul. It would have been the end of her.

Rohan tied his handkerchief around her head, moved her hair up, and placed the cap over it again before he asked, "How many more souls before this is over?"

"Thirty more before I am done. We have come a long way from one hundred and eighty to thirty, don’t you think?" she said brightly to assure him she was fine. He pinched her nose playfully, knowing she was putting up a front despite the pain.

"Don’t try to put up a front in my presence. I know it hurts badly. Come, rest your head," he said as he carried her to the hand-woven rug beside the heating stove in the small living room.

They didn’t leave the house immediately. Rohan gave her water and made her eat the jerkies.

It was while she was eating and Rohan was wrapping up the Witcher’s black heart at the side that something snapped in the room. They both turned toward the sound to see Kuhn transforming.

Belle stared as his body began to take on a reaper’s form, his height growing taller and his cloak longer, a scythe forming in his wooded hand.

"It’s time..." she muttered as she pushed herself up from where she was sitting.

Immediately after his transformation completed, Rohan lost the ability to see the creature. His eyes narrowed as he walked back to Belle.

"Why can’t I see him anymore?" he asked. He could tell the creature was still in the house from the way Belle stared toward where Kuhn had been standing before he went invisible to Rohan.

"Because he’s no longer my pet. He is a reaper of himself now. Dark witches are hard to kill, and many reapers don’t succeed in crossing their soul. Feeding on their last moments is like eating a magic elixir to help with growth. It heightened Kuhn’s growth."

Belle stared at the new reaper who was watching her back, and something tugged painfully in her heart.

"So this is it, Kuhn," she remarked with a bittersweet smile, knowing she would no longer see him around or have any control over him anymore. Kuhn had been a great help and a companion to her for the past years, and especially these past few days, an invisible errand-goer and someone who watched over her and the castles for any approaching visitors when Rohan wasn’t there. She would miss him terribly, and the thought made her eyes sting a little.

’Kuhn is grateful to serve you until now, Astral. But may we never meet again, because it will mean the end for you if we do. Tell Rohan thank you for all the time he feed Kuhn and keep him safe. Farewell,’ his voice echoed faintly as he disappeared. It was time he served as a Watcher before he could ever become a reaper who walked the land of the living to take souls.

"Farewell..." Belle muttered, sadness swelling in her chest. "He’s gone, Rohan," she whispered as he pulled her into his embrace.

"I know..." Rohan muttered softly. He didn’t expect the sadness in his own heart, for Kuhn had been his companion as well. Though stubborn, it had been fun to have someone invisible as a friend, someone who made everything easier, from keeping him company when he was a boy to looking after his family when he wasn’t there. Kuhn was annoying sometimes, but Rohan suddenly realized he would miss him.

Farewell, old friend.

Rohan let Belle rest a little in the small house before they left, as they couldn’t be there when the villagers would discover they had lost their neighbors.
