Since the East District had made it clear they didn't want her, Lady Veyra built her own power from scratch.
Lord Vohran ruled with an iron fist and almost no allies. Lady Veyra knew how to exploit that. Sharp mind, sharper instincts—within five years, she'd quietly swayed almost half of the East District's soldiers to her side.
When she finally struck, it was like lightning out of a clear sky. She marched those troops into the North District and clashed hard with its defenders. Both sides came out battered, but she held her ground.
Going back to the East District was out of the question. She dug in here instead—moved her mother into the heart of her new base, kept recruiting, and spent heavily on skilled advisors. Bit by bit, she carved out a territory of her own.
Every move was driven by a single purpose: to show her father she had more brains and grit to run the East District than her brother ever would.
That gaping pit at the North District's gate? Only one man had the gall to pull something like that—Lord Vohran.
Were it not for that last stubborn thread of family loyalty, she would've flattened the East District by now. Every time she eased up, Lord Vohran saw it as an opening to push harder. He'd been overstepping boundaries for years.
Matthew watched her expression—cold, distant, somewhere far away in thought. He could guess the picture in her head.
"I can help you," he stated.
Her eyes narrowed. "Why would I believe that?"
"I can give your mother her sight back," Matthew replied.
He'd caught sight of a fresh notice on the district bulletin board earlier—Lady Veyra's mother had lost her sight overnight from some stubborn eye disease. Anyone who could restore her sight would walk away with 300 thousand Dornia Emeralds and a single exemption from prosecution.
"If you can cure her, then we can discuss anything," she answered without hesitation.
Lord Vohran's games had stoked her rage; still, it was her mother's condition that truly kept her restless through every night and every waking hour.
"Follow me," Lady Veyra ordered.
Matthew shifted Ariya in his arms and trailed Lady Veyra to a refined, sunlit house not far from the main villa.
Inside, near a tall window, a frail old woman sat gazing into the light as if she were waiting for something that would never arrive.
Matthew felt a twinge in his chest. Not everyone gets to have that kind of love.
