Lady Veyra took a slow lap around the curved walkway, listening to the echo bounce back from the cavern below. She tilted her head, that rare half-smile tugging at her lips. "Sounds like the cave's whispering back. Let's call it the Whisperfall Bridge."
Matthew gave a faint smirk. Not bad. Has a nice ring to it.
In the treeline, Lord Vohran's scout shifted impatiently. The crowd on the bridge was laughing, calling out to each other, and stomping their boots just to hear the rumble answer back. For a part of District 12 that had been nothing but grit and gunpowder for decades, it suddenly felt almost cheerful.
The scout tapped his earpiece. "Lord Vohran, I've got eyes on them. They built a bridge over the hole."
"What?" Lord Vohran's voice cracked through the static. "Since yesterday?"
"It's not just a bridge, my lord. It talks back—an echo bridge. People are lining up to try it." The scout's tone carried just a little too much awe.
Lord Vohran snapped, "I didn't send you there for a d*mn tourist review! You're blowing it up tonight!"
The scout hesitated. "You sure you don't want to see it first? It's... something else."
"When did you start pitching me travel plans?" Vohran's tone turned cold.
The scout swallowed hard, gave a quick nod, and slipped off to prepare.
A pause, then Vohran's voice returned. "Change of plan. Get the stealth boys ready. I'm coming. I want to see what my dear sister's hiding under that bridge."
"Yes, Lord Vohran." This time, the scout's grin stayed buried in the shadows.
...
At 2 a.m., the East District's stealth unit ghosted through the trees, all dark cloth and soundless steps. In the pale wash of moonlight, the Whisperfall Bridge stood empty and calm in a way that felt wrong.
Lord Vohran led the way, gloved hand resting on the crate of explosives. Step by step, they made it to the center.
At that moment, a sharp click cut through the air.
Wham!
A huge net dropped from above, locking them in like fish in a steel weave. Their blades screeched against the mesh, sparks flying, but the alloy didn't even scratch. The harder they fought, the tighter the net held them.
"We just marched into her d*mn snare," Lord Vohran spat, his teeth grinding.
...
At 5 a.m., the North District woke to the sound of boots—steady, deliberate. Lady Veyra's purple-clad troops moved in flawless formation, rifles raised, until the Whisperfall Bridge was locked in on all sides.
The Black Market was already stirring, and word spread fast. People poured in, whispering and pointing at the scene.
