Matthew stayed rooted in place, posture steady, voice carrying that unshakable calm. "My bet? He's just getting warmed up. Blowing up the road was him dipping a toe in. Let him think you're boxed in, then make him regret ever stepping into your district."
The thought dug in. If she pulls the East District into her grip, her reach doubles overnight. She wouldn't just be holding her ground—she'd be calling the shots for all of District 12. The South and West Districts wouldn't dare stir the pot. Maybe, for once, this place wouldn't feel one spark away from going up in flames.
Ariya's face then slipped into his mind. She'll be back with her birth father soon. If this plan works, it could be the best parting gift I leave her—a quiet district, no guns drawn, no streets on fire. Not a bad way to say goodbye.
Veyra crossed her arms, studying him. "So, Dr. Larden—what's the play?"
Matthew revealed, "Step one, we fix the mess at the gate. Step two, make sure Lord Vohran walks right into our little surprise."
...
The next morning, the place was swarming with workers. Shovels clinked against rock as dirt poured into the enormous crater. The hole was deep enough to swallow a truck whole, and when the men tossed stones in, there wasn't even an echo.
"Dr. Larden, what the hell did they use? This isn't the average black market fireworks," Lady Veyra muttered, wiping sweat from her brow.
Matthew crouched by the edge, running his hand over the soil. "It's not just the blast. There's a huge cavern under here. The ground was paper-thin. One good hit and it collapsed like rotten wood."
"Well, aren't you full of surprises, Dr. Larden?" Veyra's brows lifted, a flicker of intrigue in her gaze. The way this man reads terrain… he's no ordinary doctor.
"Alright, tell them to pack it up," Matthew replied, brushing the dirt off his hands.
She stared at him. "That's it? We're leaving the hole as is?"
"We're not filling it. We're building over it," he replied, voice flat and certain. "Start dumping dirt now, and you'll still be at it when winter comes."
In truth, the day's shoveling was nothing more than bait. He knew Lord Vohran's people were lurking nearby, and he wanted them running back with one story—that the North District had walked away from the job.
Indeed, deep within the woods near the North District gate, a lone scout stopped abruptly before Lord Vohran, kneeling and struggling to breathe. "They're gone, Lord Vohran. The hole remains wide open."
A slow, razor-edged grin crept across Lord Vohran's face. "Perfect. A cavern right under her front gate—what are the odds? She can dump dirt in there until her hair turns gray, and it won't change a thing. No road means no Black Market. No Black Market means no money. Once the cash flow dies, so does she."
He flicked his fingers in dismissal. "Keep watch tomorrow."
A smug satisfaction curled in Lord Vohran's chest. Without those Black Market runners feeding her intel, bringing Lady Veyra down would be child's play.
