Weston felt a bolt of electricity crack through his spine. His body jerked, breath trapped in his lungs, as he stared at Laura with eyes that refused to accept what they were seeing.
“You… You came looking for me?” Weston’s voice broke on the question, rough and unsteady, as though each syllable scraped its way out of a winter–cold throat.
“Of course I did. Back then, I had nowhere else to turn. You were born into a dynasty of attorneys. One word from you, and every prestigious firm in the city would have opened its doors to me. I was ready to abandon my pride for that single lifeline. Yet you were happier sealed inside your villa, dancing through a party with your friends, than sparing even one minute for me. Do you know how long I waited outside your gate? In the end, a servant finally appeared and told me you didn’t wish to see me. Even after that, I would not quit. I caught sight of you on campus and tried again, but you walked past me with a look that treated me like empty air, as if I had never mattered at all.”
That was the moment she understood with painful clarity they had always belonged to different worlds; their paths never should have crossed, let alone intertwined.
“I… I didn’t know,” Weston muttered, his complexion paling as though the words themselves tasted of ash.
Laura let out a cold laugh. “Didn’t know? Mr. Windore, it was years ago. Of course, you wouldn’t remember. Why would a man keep a casual fling filed in his memory?”
“Laura, I-” Weston tried to explain, the phrase crumbling before it could take shape.
“Enough! Back then, I didn’t blame you. I was the one who misjudged the gulf between us. I chased after you, and I was the one who ended it. When I returned for help and you refused to see me, I accepted that I had dug my own grave. But love you? I already loved you once, and men like you don’t earn a second chance. Whether you want revenge or believe you still feel something, forget about making me fall for you again.”
Her words rang out, clear and uncompromising, like a gavel struck against marble.
And in her eyes burned an unyielding finality that told him every bridge behind her had been set aflame.
For an instant, Weston felt as though a boulder had been placed on his ribs, squeezing the breath from his lungs.
He parted his lips, searching for something–anything–to say.
But his throat tightened, and every sentence he had rehearsed dissolved into dust.
“That’s enough, Mr. Windore. If you have nothing else, please leave. I have other matters to attend to.”
Weston swayed, complexion darkening as he looked at her.
“I… I will find out the truth and seek justice for you,” he whispered at last.
With that promise hanging in the air, he turned and walked away.
Laura’s lips curved into a mocking smile; she had long since outgrown any need for explanations.
At this point, what difference could an explanation possibly make?

Because she was to marry Julius, the newlywed suite would naturally be prepared within the manor’s walls.

Long before their arrival, Julius had sent staff ahead to refresh the master bedroom. The somber charcoal palette had been replaced with the soft, muted hues Quinn favored.
Following his instructions, every servant they passed greeted Quinn with a respectful, “Mrs. Whitethorn.”
“From today on, you are the mistress of this house. Whatever you need, give the order, and they will see to it,” said Julius.
“Alright,” Quinn accepted it. “Let’s get the marriage certificate tomorrow. Today, I’d like to visit your mother and grandparents‘ graves.”
Julius looked at her, surprised. “You want to… visit them?”
“We’re about to get married,” Quinn said gently. “It’s only right to let them know.”
Julius hesitated for a moment. “Okay. I’ll have someone make the arrangements. We’ll go in a bit.”
An hour later, they set off for the cemetery.
Julius‘ grandparents shared a double grave. His grandmother had passed first, and his grandfather had been buried beside her less than a year ago.
Looking at the old man’s tombstone, Quinn recalled the first time she’d ever seen Julius.
“Did you know?” she said quietly. “When your grandfather was being buried, I actually saw you at the cemetery gate.”
Julius‘ eyes flickered with surprise. “So we met earlier than I thought. If only you’d called out to me then. I could’ve known you sooner.”
“Back then, I never imagined we’d end up connected like this.” Quinn smiled faintly. Maybe, some things really are meant to be.
