Weston sat in motionless watch, tracking Harlan’s hand as it lifted glass after glass to his lips. “Is it really so impossible for you to let Quinn go?”
Harlan slapped the empty tumbler down, a short, mirthless laugh rattling out of him. “Let her go? Easy for you to say. Do you think i fall for someone at the drop of a hat? Or do you?”
The words struck like a slap. Weston’s mouth opened, closed, then stayed shut.
A rueful curve tugged at Harlan’s lips, as though he already knew the price of unspoken feelings. “If you’re not someone who loves easily, then figure your heart out early. Don’t wait until she loves someone else and you’re stuck choking on regret.”
Weston’s fingers tightened around his glass until the rim dug a thin line into his palm.
Will I end up drowning in regret too?
Once, he had believed his life was blessedly free of anything worth regretting.
Then, he learned what Laura had endured–the night Sylas Seymour almost forced himself on her, the bruising struggle that followed. She clawed her way through courts and paperwork until the man was locked behind bars. In that moment, regret punched straight through his ribs.
He despised how casually he had agreed to their breakup, as though those years together were nothing but a discarded receipt.
He loathed even more the icy indifference he had wielded afterward, desperate to prove she meant nothing while every heartbeat screamed the opposite.
Would the future hand him another wound he could patch only with late apologies?
Somewhere inside, the answer was rising like dawn–bright, unavoidable, and impossible to ignore.
The next morning, Laura followed the address Quinn had texted and arrived at the hospital where Gavin worked.
Sleep had been a fickle stranger; whenever she closed her eyes, that old nightmare resurfaced–Sylas‘ shadow, his leering grin, the claustrophobic hallway.
She woke slick with sweat, whispering that it was only a dream, though her racing pulse insisted otherwise.
Gavin served as the hospital’s guest surgeon, appearing just one day each week, his appointments vanishing faster than concert tickets.
Thanks to Quinn, Laura bypassed the booking chaos and walked straight in without a number slip.
When Gavin spotted her, a warm smile surfaced, as though they were old friends meeting beneath kinder skies. “We meet again,” he said, tone gently teasing.
“Indeed. I’m in your hands today, Dr. Huxley.”
He gestured to the leather chair opposite his desk, sleek instruments glinting under surgical–white light. “Please, have a seat and tell me what’s been bothering you.”
Thirty minutes later, he printed her prescription and glanced at his watch, its hands already flirting with noon. “You’re my last

patient this morning. Care to grab lunch with me?”
Laura nodded without hesitation; Gavin was Julius‘ friend and, as of today, her attending physician.

They strolled into the hospital lobby, marble floor echoing beneath their steps. Across the atrium, Weston had just collected his own prescription and was turning to leave when Laura’s laugh sliced through the air. He stopped dead.
Laura? What brings her here?
And who, exactly, is the man walking so comfortably at her side?
Watching them trade easy smiles, Weston felt something massive settle on his chest, a weight that made each breath shallow.
Why can she meet my gaze with ice, yet shine so brightly for someone else?
His fist tightened around the paper bag of medicine until the cardboard crumpled, his face draining of color.
At that moment, a warm voice broke the hush of the corridor. Footsteps stopped right beside Weston. Miles Sutton, the hospital’s vice director and an old acquaintance, blinked in surprise. “Well, Mr. Windore, what brings you to the hospital today?”
Weston snapped out of his reverie and focused on the man’s familiar face. “Stomach’s acting up,” he said, lowering his voice like the confession carried weight. “Came in for something to settle it.”
Miles smiled, concern softening into camaraderie. “Your stomach deserves proper care. Noon is around the corner–join me for lunch?”
Weston opened his mouth to decline, yet before the word could form, his gaze drifted to the bulletin board beside them. Rows of glossy posters advertised the hospital’s star physicians, their white coats bright under studio lights.
One face leaped out like a flare in fog–the very man he had just seen walking with Laura. Printed beneath the confident smile was a name he could not forget: “Dr. Gavin Huxley.”
Miles tilted his head, puzzled. “Mr. Windore, is something wrong?”
“Tell me, Mr. Sutton, how well do you know Dr. Huxley?” Weston kept his tone casual, though the question felt barbed even to him.
“Dr. Huxley? Quite a remarkable fellow,” Miles replied. “We fought tooth and nail to bring him in as a visiting specialist. Why? Do you know him?”
“Not at all,” Weston said, offering a measured smile. “I’m simply curious. Maybe we can talk more about him over lunch.”
“Certainly, certainly.” Miles brightened. “There’s an excellent place just around the corner, my treat.”
Weston answered with a faint nod, yet as they turned to leave, his gaze drifted back to Gavin’s poster, lingering on that confident smile like a fingernail on a bruise.
Laura was chatting with this doctor. Does she know him? When did she come to know someone like Gavin?
Question after question streaked past his mind.
At the restaurant entrance, Miles suddenly exclaimed, “Well, look who’s here! Dr. Huxley, fancy meeting you at lunchtime.”
Gavin offered a warm handshake. “Pure coincidence. I’m grabbing a quick bite with a friend.” He turned, presenting Laura and Miles to each other with gracious ease.

“A friend? Laura, I had no idea you had a friend like Dr. Huxley.” A cool voice cut through the pleasantries. Weston stepped forward, every syllable dipped in velvet and ice.
Laura’s eyes widened. Weston again–yesterday in the lobby, today here.
What kind of cursed destiny keeps throwing him across my path?
