**Chapter 479**
Maggie remained silent, her thoughts swirling in a storm of confusion.
What was left to discuss between them?
Was Franklin genuinely oblivious to the tension, or was he simply feigning ignorance?
Just then, Isabella, sensing the charged atmosphere, reached out to Maggie, her small hand tugging gently at her sleeve. “Mom, can we talk about the project I’m working on at school?” The innocent question pulled Maggie from her reverie, and she turned her focus to Isabella, deliberately sidestepping Franklin.
Franklin, recognizing the shift, didn’t attempt to push for a conversation. Instead, when the dishes arrived, he took it upon himself to serve some food into Maggie’s bowl.
Maggie hesitated, her heart racing slightly at the unexpected gesture. She finally spoke, her tone measured yet firm, “No need. I can manage on my own.”
The slight edge in her voice was unmistakable, and Franklin paused, a flicker of disappointment crossing his features. He then turned to Isabella, offering her a generous helping of food, and she looked between her parents, puzzled by the unspoken tension. “Mom, if Dad wants to give you food, just let him,” she urged, her youthful innocence shining through.
Still, Maggie remained tight-lipped, her gaze fixed on her bowl.
Franklin, undeterred, smiled softly and placed another piece of meat into her bowl, his persistence evident.
At that precise moment, the server entered with more dishes, disrupting the delicate atmosphere. The door to their private room stood ajar, and Janice, along with Old Mrs. Green and a few others, happened to pass by. They caught sight of Franklin serving food to Maggie and the trio seated together.
Time seemed to freeze for a heartbeat.
Inside the room, however, Maggie and Isabella were oblivious to the onlookers. It was the server who first noticed the group outside, and before he could announce their arrival, Janice quickly regained her composure. “Come on, let’s go inside,” she urged, gently nudging Old Mrs. Green forward. Sophia, her lips curling in disdain, followed closely behind, with Tracy and the others trailing.
Once they were in their own room, Tracy couldn’t contain herself any longer. “Didn’t you say Franklin hates Maggie? Last time and even just now, he seemed to be quite nice to her. What’s going on?”
