My Best Friend’s Father Wants me novel Chapter 34

Enora:

I headed back to the office. My stomach churned. I wanted to palm myself in the face.

The nightmares. I knew they hadn't stopped but I didn't expect him to hear them. For a rich penthouse, I expected the rooms to be more soundproof–a big thumbs down for architectural prowess.

My head was lowered as I went back to my assigned office space. The whispers and stares didn't matter as much as they did to me anymore. Everyone could say whatever they wanted. I didn't care.

"Ouch!"

I looked up, rubbing my forehead in pain.

"Miss Crystal. I didn't see you there."

She scowled. Her perfect nose looked a little more witchy up close. Who knew?

"I bet you didn't," she said acidly. "Might I recommend you a good optician so that you can get your eyes checked?"

And with that, she stormed off. I scoffed. She was bitter that she wasn't going to the gala with Mr. Wright. I didn't blame her and I didn't care either. She could be as sour as a lemon for all I cared.

I marched upstairs and soon reached my office room. I closed the door behind me and fired up the laptop. Ms. Catherine had sent me more documents for me to review and retype. I guess she had picked up my speedy typing skills and was handing me more work than usual. I didn't mind. I was getting paid very well. Abd knowing Mr. Wright, he was going to give me the raise whether I rejected it or not.

As my fingers sped away on the keys, I couldn't stop thinking about Mr. Wright. My fingers froze above the home keys.

Enora, what is wrong with you? You shouldn't have just left him all alone at the restaurant. That was a minus on my manners.

He was just worried about me and wanted to know about the nightmares. He cared, or at least, I think he did. Hopefully, he wasn't bringing this to my attention because I was disturbing his sleep every night.

I reclined in my chair. My mind was whirling and my heart was thumping. Each passing second felt like agony. I listened hard for a knock, anyone coming to call me to tell me that Mr. Wright wanted to see me. But no one came.

1:00 pm turned to 2:00 pm and all I got for the rest of the day was more work and Ms. Catherine sending me the formal invitation for the gala. There was a dress code: Silver and gold.

Mentally, I rummaged through my suitcase back at the penthouse. I had no silver or gold evening dresses. I had a stunning red one and a black one that I like slightly less but nothing in gold or silver.

A sigh escaped my lips. Maybe I would have to ask Mr. Wright for an advancement in my pay so that I could buy a dress for the gala. I stopped typing and buried my face in my hand.

What was I even thinking? With my attitude today, he was obviously going to say no and would go to the gala with snotty Miss Crystal. She looked like she had a collection of gold and silver dresses.

God! I could already imagine her gloating at me.

There was a knock on the door and My heart skipped a beat as the door eased open and Ms. Catherine stuck her head inside.

"Miss Lopez, I sent you an email. It is urgent and I need it in about an hour. It is high priority."

"Yes, ma'am. I'll get to it right away."

My voice was strained and I finally exhaled as she closed the door. No calls from Mr. Wright. Yep, he was mad at me. You screwed up again, Enora. Well done.

~~~
I packed up for the day. I wasn't even going to bother going to see him in his office. He hadn't demanded to see me all day. I wasn't ready to face his burning brown eyes.
I hugged my laptop close to my chest and left my office. I walked downstairs and out of the door. I'd take a taxi to a mall. Maybe I could squeeze something out of my savings for the dress…
I froze in my tracks. My blood ran cold. There he was, in front of his car, glaring at me. His lips were a thin, hard line and his jaw was slightly clenched. I was so scared that I didn't even realize when I was walking towards him.
I stood a few inches away from him, my head lowered to his shiny leather shoes and my face a new shade of pink. Did he want to say something? Maybe I should go first.
