Hannah didn't answer. She walked straight over to Lily.
A sharp, unexpected slap landed squarely on Lily's face.
The other servants in the living room heard the sound and turned to look.
“Is the name ‘Hannah’ something a servant like you is allowed to say?” Hannah asked, an eyebrow arched. “It seems I’ve been away for too long, and you’ve gotten a little too comfortable. Lily, have you forgotten where your daughter is right now?”
The mention of her daughter made Lily’s heart pound with fear.
“Such sticky fingers. Should I send you to the police station, or should I send you to join your daughter?”
Lily’s knees gave way, and she dropped to the floor, hastily holding out the necklace to Hannah.
“Ma’am, Mrs. Rosenberg… I… I wasn’t stealing. I was just thinking about whether I should help put things away. I really didn’t mean anything by it. Please, don’t punish me. I was wrong, I was so wrong!”
Hannah glanced down at the necklace.
What a coincidence. She had admired this very same necklace once. The next day, Lionel brought it home, and when she accidentally saw it, she thought it was a surprise for her. It turned out to be for Sandra.
Hannah let out a bitter laugh at the memory and walked over to the sofa to sit down, saying nothing.
Lily remained frozen, not knowing whether to stand up or stay kneeling.
Just as she was wrestling with her dilemma, Lionel walked in.
He saw Lily kneeling on the floor, her eyes wide as she pleaded with him for help.
Hannah took the divorce papers from her bag and placed them on the table.
Lionel’s heart clenched painfully as he looked at the familiar title on the document.
“Go ahead and sign. I’ve already signed my name,” Hannah said, thoughtfully placing a pen on top of the papers. “Don’t worry. Unlike you, I'm not using these to placate anyone. I genuinely want to divorce you.”
Just as Lionel was about to speak, his phone rang.
Hannah rolled her eyes internally. Of course it would ring now, of all times.
But a second later, her phone rang too.
