Hannah’s final words hit him like a physical blow. He flinched, swallowed hard, and walked faster, not daring to look back.
He had already experienced what this madwoman was capable of. No matter how bitter or furious he felt, he wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice.
He’d just have to chalk this one up to bad luck. The desire for revenge had evaporated.
Who knew what other trouble he’d stir up if he went after Hannah again? Besides, she must have been defending that other woman, Tess. That’s why she came after him so hard.
If he had known they were a team, he never would have approached Hannah in the first place. None of this would have happened. He’d walked right into a trap.
Just as James stepped out of the building, he saw a man who looked vaguely familiar standing near the entrance, glancing around.
The next second, the man’s gaze locked onto him and he started walking over.
Before James could figure out what was happening, the man raised his hand and a sharp slap echoed as it connected with his face.
Lionel glared at him, his voice a low snarl. “You’re the one who spread those disgusting rumors about my wife, aren't you? You’ve got a lot of nerve!”
The impact jolted James’s memory.
