Cameron takes my hand again. I’m still too weak to pull away. His other thumb grazes my cheek, wiping a tear. “It’s over now. You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
Afraid.
I wasn’t afraid of Kael.
Angry, yes. Broken… that was inevitable. But not afraid.
But Cameron’s touch…it unsettles me greatly.
I try to shift to express my discomfort, only then do I realize for the first time how heavy my body feels.
My arms won’t move. My muscles ache terribly. My eyes sting and my vision keeps blurring. The room spins.
“What did they give me?” I ask quietly.
Cameron hesitates again. “Painkillers. You were badly hurt. They had to take out shrapnel.”
My eyes drift to the IV bag hanging above me. Clear liquid drips steadily into the line.
Even so, it still feels wrong. The way my muscles lag feels intentional.
Like the world has slowed down around me. And he’s the only one who gets to move faster. Like he gets to control the pace of my mind.
He brushes my hair away from my face, stroking my cheek gently. When he speaks, his voice is a whisper. “You should rest. I’ll be right here with you.”
I want to tell him no. I want to tell him I need to see Liam, that I need to see Kael and demand an explanation… that I need to breathe something other than his suffocating sweetness.
But my tongue feels heavy. It’s stuck to the bottom of my mouth.
Black spots dance across the edges of my vision. My consciousness is slipping again.
Cameron leans closer, his hand still cupping my face. “Everything’s going to be alright, Laila. You’re safe. I’ll take care of you. I always have.”
His breath fans across my cheek. Warm, comforting…but wrong.
The last thing I see before the world slips into darkness is the faint smile on his lips…
And a look in his eyes that I can’t quite decipher.

Chapter 93
:
When I wake up the next time, the bright light from outside the window has gone dim. It’s night.
My head is still throbbing. It’s even worse now, for whatever reason.
Maybe the painkillers Cameron was talking about have faded.
I turn slightly, blinking until the room comes into focus.
The chair beside the bed is empty now. Cameron’s nowhere to be seen. Thankfully.
For the first time since I regained consciousness, I’m alone. I exhale a breath of relief.

My hand trembles as I reach for the tube taped to my arm. The beeping from the monitor gets faster.
I try to sit up, but the dizziness slams into me like a brick to the head. I fall back against the pillow, gasping.
My throat is dry. I force myself to swallow. “Liam…”
If Cameron won’t take me to see my son, I’ll go see him myself.
A sound escapes me as I struggle to sit up. It’s not a word, more like a fractured breath.
Somewhere beyond the door, I pick up on two voices. One of them is unmistakably Cameron’s.
“…keep her on it for now. She’s still fragile. The sedative helps keep her calm. And that’s exactly what she needs to be. Till everything is sorted out.”
Sedative? My pulse spikes.
The other voice, a man, probably the doctor, replies back but I can’t catch his words.
Then footsteps start getting closer.
The door handle turns, and I shut my eyes quickly, steadying my breaths as much as I can.
The door opens, and I feel the shift in the air as someone steps closer.
“Her vitals are steady,” the doctor murmurs. “It’s amazing how fast she’s recovering after suffering such grave injuries.”
“She’s strong,” Cameron says softly. “She always was.”
There’s something in his tone that strikes me as unsettling.
I stay as still as possible, though every instinct in me is screaming at me to run. My body doesn’t obey… I’m not in any condition to do anything right now.
But if Cameron’s up to something. I need to know.
Cameron’s voice drops lower, he’s leaning close to my ear now. “You’ll be fine soon, love. Then we’ll take Liam home. We’ll start over.”

Chapter 93
Love… what the hell is he on about?
The door clicks shut again, and I’m left alone.
I open my eyes slowly, staring up at the ceiling.
A tear slides down the side of my face.
I know Cameron better than I’d like to. Better than he thinks I do, even.
He’s lying. I don’t know why or about what, but he’s lying.

Kael might be many things…but he wouldn’t just leave. Myself aside… he wouldn’t leave Liam. He would die before letting anything happen to him.
But even so, Kael isn’t innocent. He failed. He broke the one promise that brought us together.
He let Liam get hurt and he wasn’t there.
My hands clench tightly. The heart monitor beeps faster.
And if Cameron saved us, why is he trying to make Kael into the culprit?
Anger surges through my veins.
Kael turns me against Cameron. Now Cameron’s doing the same thing.
The Blackwood brothers… just what do they take me for?
I close my eyes, breathing through the ache in my chest.
“Kael,” I whisper. “I should never have trusted you.”
My voice is a whisper. But the monitor beeps faster for a second, like it hears me.
Outside, I hear Cameron’s voice again. It’s faint, smug, talking to someone on the phone.
My heart tightens. He thinks I’m broken. He thinks I can be used by him too.
But I remember the smoke. I remember the fire. I remember Marie’s hand slipping from mine.
And I remember Kael’s voice in my head, sharp and angry and alive.
Marie had said someone came into the house that night.
Cameron says it’s Kael. I know Cameron was headed my way last we spoke… I also know Sarah has been suspiciously absent through everything.
Before the darkness takes me again, I make a silent promise.
Cameron Blackwood… Kael Blackwood, they both owe me a debt. I’ll make sure they pay.

I’ll find who set the lake house on fire. I’ll hunt down whoever hurt my son and I, and if it’s either one of the Blackwood brothers, or that damned bitch Sarah,
The Blackwood dynasty will burn.
