I glance up. I’m not surprised to find Cameron sitting by my bedside. At this point, I almost expect it.
It’s been three days since I first regained consciousness. Cameron has come visiting every day, and whenever he does, he stays a while.
Watching me, tending to me…long enough till I give into the uneasy comfort of unconsciousness.
Each morning I wake up to his company, I make the very same appeal.
I ask Cameron to let me see Liam.
Each time, he reassures me that he’ll take me to him. But not long after, the sedatives they’re pumping into my system tugs me right back into an unconscious state.
Just like that, three days have passed by. No answers… no Liam.
Cameron gives no explanations. Instead, he’s always quick to assure me that he will take me to Liam on the next visit.
In quiet moments when no one else knows I’m conscious, I find myself wondering if his words are sincere, or if he’s just counting on the sedatives to keep me under and stall for time.
About the sedatives… I haven’t let Cameron know that I know about them. Or that the dosage they administered is slowly losing its potency as my system adapts to it.
An advantage of being born to a pure bloodline.
Somewhere deep down, I still don’t believe he’d ever hurt me. But… I’m not certain of anything anymore. Nothing makes sense since the fire.
In these three days, I’ve come to two conclusions.
First, Cameron lied about Liam being in a coma. And that’s why he’s unable to take me to see him.
And the second… Cameron now knows for sure that Liam is his son. Not Kael’s.
“You don’t have Liam, do you?”
My question seems to catch Cameron off guard and for a moment he just stares. His eyes move downwards, as if the answer to my question is written somewhere on the pristine white tiles.
“I did. Until five days ago…”
“I…” He trails off, his tone pained. “I didn’t want to upset you. Or disturb your recovery.”

Chapter 94
My blood runs cold. My heart dropping to the pit of my stomach.

I asked the question hoping Cameron would deny it…. hoping that he would have a better explanation for his
avoidance.
But his response only confirms my suspicions. And if Cameron doesn’t have Liam like he claimed, then where is my son?
My lips tremble. My tongue suddenly weighs a ton, too heavy to form the question.
Cameron quickly interrupts,
“He’s alive. That much I’m sure of. My enforcers report he seems to have been taken by an unidentified group when he was moved from the emergency unit.”
“An… unknown group?”
Cameron nods, “They don’t seem to have any known affiliations. It’s likely they just want something from the Blackwood Pack and hope to use Liam as…” He trails off…
My throat tightens, my heart pulsing painfully.
“False hope…is even more cruel.” My voice is barely above a whisper. “Why did you feel the need to lie to me for this long?”
There’s a lot more Cameron is lying about. I don’t even know if there’s any truth to anything he’s said so far.
Cameron winces visibly. “We’re doing everything we can at the moment to find him. And we’re getting close… I’ll get him back to you. I swear it.”
He gives my hand a gentle squeeze. “Trust me, Laila.”
I have just enough strength in me to pull my hand away.
Trust? There’s nothing left that I can trust. No one…at least not in this room.
“Look,” Cameron says, placing a metal item in my hand. “The unknown group seems to be a well coordinated organisation. And this is their seal.”
My eyes settle on the image engraved on it, the familiar semblance of a howling wolf stares back at me. Regal and mysterious.
“I’m familiar with the seals of all the Alphas on this side of the continent, and even beyond. But this is nothing like I’ve ever seen before.” He confesses, “However, it’s a good enough lead. My enforcers are on the trail and they won’t stop till they find Liam…”
“I won’t stop…” Cameron trails off, his eyes revealing his determination.
He knows. There’s no doubt about it.
But it doesn’t matter what he thinks he knows. The truth never did matter to the Blackwoods.

The only thing that matters is the one holding the power to change the narrative to suit their own purposes.
“Do you recognise it?” Cameron asks,
